Looks like that channel you refer to will just be called "Drama" On Freeview only? Surely not?

Here is the press release from UKTV: http://corporate.uktv.co.uk/news/art...curtain-drama/ Quote:
Launching on 8 July 2013 and available to all British viewers via Freeview, Drama will air a diverse range of critically-acclaimed shows featuring stellar talent, many of whom have gone on to join Hollywood’s elite. Michaelalanr In the year which celebrates the bicentenary of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, viewers will be treated to Colin Firth’s much lauded turn as Mr Darcy in the acclaimed mini-series. They will also see an early appearance by Catherine Zeta-Jones in Catherine Cookson’s The Cinder Path and a swashbuckling Sean Bean in Sharpe. Other shows include Tipping the Velvet, Auf Wiedersehen Pet, Cranford and Lark Rise to Candleford. UKTV Controller Emma Tennant, said: “Drama is targeted at a different audience demographic than our other highly successful free-to-air channels, Dave, Yesterday and Really. The channel is aimed at people who simply love drama and want to watch critically-acclaimed shows that have absolutely defined the landscape of British television. I am very passionate about the subject and discussing the programmes that will create Drama's schedule has just been brilliant fun. I'm genuinely excited about the launch of Drama both as a viewer and as Controller.” The channel is the first to be unveiled as part of UKTV’s thriving portfolio since the introduction of Really in May 2009 and it will be a home for the best British dramas from a range of broadcasters spanning the last 40 years. Adrian Wills, General Manager of Drama, adds: “Drama lovers’ prayers have been answered. This channel represents the best drama content within the genre and we are confident that viewers will enjoy these celebrated shows.” The announcement of the new channel comes after an incredibly successful period for UKTV which proved record breaking for the network of 10 channels. UKTV increased its share by 10% in 2012 and launched its own On Demand players. UKTV’s free-to-air channels have also enjoyed huge success with Really and Yesterday leading the Lifestyle and Factual genres respectively and Dave up 33% in share compared to the same period last year. Drama will become the fourth free-to-air channel in UKTV’s portfolio and its channel number will be announced in the coming days. Drama’s target audience is ABC1 adults and the on-air and off-air creative for the channel includes a dynamic logo and complimentary idents created by design agency DixonBaxi.

Wait, there's no circle around that logo... It doesn't feel right. Unless with the Y for Yesterday and now the D for Drama, are we gonna see new channel looks/DOGs that are just one big letter logos and the full name underneath?
Sort of like Microsoft Office with their W, X, O, P, A etc. for their products. |

LCN 20 would be a good slot next to yesterday and move Gold to LCN 25.

At least it looks like being an upmarket channel, aiming itself at people with at least half a brain. That's to be welcomed. Doubtless the content will be repeated endlessly, but at least it's another alternative and offers more genuine choice to the viewer than Dave +1.

One thing is certain. It'll be the usual crap low bitrate sub standard picture quality we've come to expect from any channel on the freeview COM muxes.

Given the channel's British focus " it will be a home for the best British dramas from a range of broadcasters spanning the last 40 years" I wonder if Drama will replace Blighty on pay tv? Perhaps this will be announced when the channel number(s) are announced? |

Chances are at some point it will end up on pay tv
abc1 and quest which both started out as freeview went over to Sky and Virgin too. Just seems like it ends up with content overlap and channels which just have endless repeats. I'm not saying that it's a bad thing. And I hope the new channel does well as it will really make them consider an even greater freetoview strategy. I'm simply saying I think the channels could be slightly better organised. Example just before the UKTV re-branded all there channels the lines between them had become very blurred and most progs were being shown over 2 channels, and when the rebrand took place, to Dave, Home ect I think it did help but it just seems in my opinion that it has been heading back that way. As I saw someone elses' post on the news section Gavin and Stacey has been shown across 4 UKTV channels! |

A rose by any other name as the saying goes? |

No mention of whether it's going to be on other platforms although I expect it'll be on one of Sky's subscription entertainment packages.
Sky really can't afford to lose too many more channels from the basic Varity/Entertainment pack as there are already customers grumbling about less channels but no price cut to reflect it. |

Of course it would be nice if they put Miss Marple and Inspector Alleyn or Campion and not chop them up with badly placed ad breaks or cut out 20mins of the program so it fits the slot provided.
It could also mean that Yesterday may focus more on History and documentary shows rather than being a general entertainment channel by another name. |

It would be good if they included Old Play for Todays and Wednesday Plays and not just stuff from the last 10-20 years as ITV3 seems to do. I know that companies seem afraid to show older stuff because it confirms how far TV has fallen since its golden days.

On many occasions very old shows do not get repeated due to the perennial issue of rights agreements

So now that the Catherine Cookson series has been shown to death on Yesterday, they are now going to show them to death on Drama!
Would be good if Yesterday started showing more history programmes and knocked the light dramas and sit-coms on the head. |
