Courtesy of a relative I was able to get my hands on one of the media preview copies of the game & have been playing it over the past few days.

I think its clear that its an arcade racer rather than a simulation & that its been created for the casual players who will be playing with controller's & not for those who plan to use driving wheels/pedals.

With a pad it doesn't feel too bad but with a wheel it feels awful.

As to the cars, The standard road cars feel quite nice but the race cars slide around & want to drift way too much.

Its also far too easy, I was able to win very easily even on the hardest difficulty settings.

Its also one of these games which force you to take part on drifting competitions to progress & im not a big fan of drifting so found these sections frustrating.

On the PS3 there's problems with inconsistent frame rate & it doesn't look as good graphically as other titles out there including Codemasters own F1 series & Dirt 3. Maybe the full game will be improved in these areas.

I was looking sort of forward to this game but after playing this I've decided that I won't be buying this game.

I'm surprised with Codies, i don't know if this trend has happened on console yet but on PC they have gone down the 'preorder bonuses reward scheme' which really annoys the hell out of me (this). I'm happy with RRRE on PC for the time being.

I'm happy with RRRE on PC for the time being.
Been having a ton of fun on that myself.
This is from the early teaser/demo from a few months back:

Back on topic, I did enjoy the 1st Grid initially but did stop enjoying it when I got to a certain point & haven't played it since.

Was looking forward to Grid 2 but have heard some things recently regarding the Gameplay, Handling & how it works with wheels which has put me off a bit.

I'm going to wait for its release & see what the guys at inside Sim Racing as well as other sites dedicated to driving games rate it before deciding to buy or not.

Alan Boiston from Team VVV has some gameplay vids & opinions about it on his YouTube channel:

The Codemasters of today are a different team to the ones who released the original GRID. So many of their key staff left for Playground games. I liked the original GRID but I was spoiled by the physics of Forza which meant I could never really enjoy GRID as much as I'd like to. I'm interested in this but from watching recent footage I'm not seeing anything that stands out, no cockpit cam or assists is pretty offputting!

I loved GRID, so I'd be interested to see someone's opinion who has played both. Things like driving games are so personal preference orientated that it's hard to take someone else's opinion.

If though the OP had loved the first GRID but hates GRID2, that's something to go by, but if they never played the original there's no frame of reference, unfortunately.

Interesting you say its very easy - even on difficult.

There are several developer videos of the later stage races that seem anything but easy - are you saying those aren't in the game now or are now "easy"

(i.e dev manages to come only 2nd around Paris in elimination race despite not hitting the sides at all on a very tight, narrow track.)

As a huge fan of the original GRID, I'm really looking forward to GRID 2. I've pre ordered the Race Day Edition online, I can't wait to play it

I really hope we get a demo. We should fingers crossed get one but sometimes Codies don't bother with releasing a demo, it's pretty hit and miss really. We got a demo for the original GRID so hopefully we will get one for GRID 2.

The first one was one of my all time favourite PS3 games so far, i was gutted when they turned the online servers off for this game.

I'll probably be online over the weekend with Grid 2 providing it arrives in the post and i'll hopefully be as impressed with this game as i was the first.

Had a little play on Grid 2, I wasn't keen on it maybe not my kind of racer, going to play a little further before I decide to buy.

I quite like it, but it's quite arcadey in its handling. I was a big fan of Grid 1 and I play most other racing games. It's not excellent, but it's a fair effort. I haven't tried any of the track racing yet though, so I will see how well the handling manages that.

I got my copy of Grid 2 this morning in the post. I absolutely love it. As a huge fan of the original Grid, I'm pleased to say it's every bit as good as the original if not better!

The game handles pretty much as the original although the cars I've driven in so far aren't the best in the game. I guess I won't be playing the supercars until later in the game, but so far so good I love the handling. The AI is certainly harder than in the original and can be quite aggressive, even in the easier difficulty settings (I've tried both Easy and Normal difficulty so far).

The locations are also really detailed, especially the California Coast track which is awsome. I also love the Live Routes events. I've played 2 Live Route events so far.

I've also got a 48 hours free Xbox Live trial (built in to the game!) so I'll be trying the online modes later. But so far so good, Grid 2 is proving to be an awsome sequel so far

Always found GRID to be one of the most disappointing racing games around.

It looked like it should be terrific but the physics was just hopeless.
It was as if the track surface was ice, covered in toffee.
You had reasonable grip until you lost it but then it was just plain impossible to get it back.

The worst offenders were the GT cars. I've driven a real Murcielago and if it handled anything like the one in the game I think Lamborghini would have been driven to liquidation by lawsuits.

About the only good thing about it was the banger racing. That was TERRIFIC fun!

Hopefully GRID 2 will have more banger racing, at least.

Grid isn't a full sim though. It has an arcade edge to make it a bit more fun and easier for the novice.

Isn't full sim? I would say it's no where near sim.I don't think it's meant to be either, if it is then very poor attempt from the devs.

Been playing this since yesterday and TBH, I don't find it as good as the first one. No banger racing is a major bummer for me.

Also, the UI Codemasters use is getting old now, they really need to come out with a new UI.

Going off the reviews I have read it seems to be stuck in the middle of arcade or simulation.
Not being good at either.
I prefer Ridge Racer type games (the last one was naff though.), so I don't think I will bother.

No banger racing? At all?

Deal-breaker, right there.

Was playing the PC version earlier & don't really like it.

I kinda enjoyed the 1st game but hate the handling feel on the 2nd, Its like every car just wants to drift all the time when playing with a wheel. I tried it out with a pad & the handling felt a lot tighter.

Also not so keen on the braking, There way too effective. You only have to tap the brake pedal & you drop a ton of speed which takes some of the braking feel away & kinda makes it a bit tricky when trying a late braking overtake.

Regarding difficulty, Im finding the Ai difficulty to be very inconsistent. I've been playing on Hard & I've had races where i've found it extremely easy or races where i've found it super easy to get to 2nd but crazy difficult to catch the leader & ended with a massive gap to the car in 3rd.
However I've still yet to not win a race.

Mine came so let Amazon off! As an arcade racer it's ok, which is what I want on my X-Box as opposed to the PC. It's a bit of fun. Don't think it'll take too long to complete, just hoping some more ovals - had a decent race at Indy in the IndyCars, but want some variety.
