SMART TV = Crap
Absolutely useless. Just spent the last hour and a half trying to watch a video on Daily Motion via SMART TV and failed epically. Web browser is slow, search function is totally useless etc. If it's function is to make me put my size 10's through the flat screen then they very nearly succeeded.

Yip.
Though I have to say, iPlayer via Smart TV works quite nicely. |

Yes BUT -- TV's with a half decent screen and graphics performance get smart / 3d + other enhancements whether you use them or not .
If you insist on non smart TV's you limit yourself to the bargain basement area ! |

OP you should have looked here first. Everyone has already commented that smart tv browsers are crap.
However a specfic app is fine. I have used iPlayer, itvplayer and 4od with success. |

Smart TVs are still in their infancy. As time goes on processors and memory will get better, user interfaces will become faster and easier to use.
Right now, I use games consoles to access "smart" functions. While you forgo the convenience, they are much more powerful thus giving a slicker experience. One day, that kind of power will be built into the TV, which is when Smart TV can start to live up to its potential, although competition from various plug-in boxes is set to be high |

I'd prefer to have the computer power used to improve the quality of the picture, than to be used as a computer.
A set top box add on would be better especially if it was upgradable. |
