I have loads of movies on old my sony camcorder tapes and more modern ones on digital video tape. I had hoped to edit and sort these using a DVD/HDD player and bought a Samsung DVD-SH895M machine a couple of years or so ago to do so.

However, now having sorted several tapes on the disk and got them to what I want, I find I am unable now to create reliable DVDs with this particular machine. More often than not the reordings simply fail. I have tried using many differing brands of DVD both +ve and -ve but the result is always the same. The disks at first play OK on the Samsung machine but when "finalised" to play on another device they fail.

I think I am going to give up with this particular machine - it was not too expensive anyway but I do want to replace it with something that will be far more reliable. I want to be able to transfer my aging video tapes onto the HDD and then create DVDs from that.

So what would all you folks out there recomend. for reliability and decent quality?

Thanks interesting as it has VHS but I really dont need that - and more to go wrong!

Wha is the reliability of copying to DVD - are there any nasties? On the Samsung if you record at half speed on the HD you can't the transfer to DVD - or the picture goes wonky.

But you cannot buy then new any more but had the last few years and its still good.
Best DVD recorder I have had.
In SP mode you can get about 2 hours on DVD good quality or use the 8GB ones as well.

Why not just use the PC you use to post here. I guess your PC has a DVD burner unless it is pre-historic

I had thought of that but have no way of getting the tapes into the PC - I suppose I would need some form of input card?? Alas the firewire connection on my camera does not work any more and the older camera only has the yellow red and white phono outputs - Which card could be recommended?

Have had great success with the kit from http://www.video-2-pc.co.uk/

That will take the inputs from red, white and yellow and feed into PC through USB port.
