It's ridiculous to categorise wine as white and red, as if they were polar opposites. If you're talking about cheap, nasty wines such as Gallo, Blossom Hill and Echo Falls, etc, then the white is likely to be less nasty than the red.
I only used to drink red at one time but now I drink white almost exclusively. I neither can afford nor have the inclination to spend 12 quid a bottle, but when it's on offer at around a fiver, I never miss out on the chance to grab a few bottles of Chileno Sauvignon Blanc. It tastes so good to me that I really have no desire to experiment with anything more expensive.
