Next Time Trailer

Teasers:

Spoiler
The episode title “Nightmare In Silver” seems somewhat inappropriate, because this doesn’t feel like a particularly dark or terrifying episode.

It’s an unusually child-friendly (or child-like… or possibly even childish) episode – in fact, at times, it’s very like watching a CBBC show.

And that’s not just because it has a couple of kids in it – the kids don’t actually get much to do.

This episode does for the Cybermen what 2005’s “Dalek” did for the pepperpots (and, indeed, what “Cold War” recently did for the Ice Warriors).

Most of the tweaks (or upgrades?) work well. But if you’re one of those who dislike the stompy Cybus Cybermen you’ll probably wish they’d gone even further.

Matt Smith gets to play four different characters (sort of). Two of them very badly.
Opinion may be divided on the third.

There are returns for: a familiar piece of music, a bit of kit the Doctor hasn’t used much lately, an old Cyber-Achilles heel, two post-2005 catchphrases, and a couple of filming locations (which hardcore fans will probably recognise instantly).

Also keep your eyes peeled for something from a Toby Whithouse episode.

A big secret is hiding in plain sight. One of the kids works it out. Can you?

Things this episode might remind you of 1: a character from The Beano.

Things this episode might remind you of 2: Star Trek: The Next Generation.

I've gotta say, I'm really gutted by those first two - I was hoping for a dark episode, not CBBC Still, that doesn't mean it can't be great, and I'm still really looking forward to it.

Nice Master reference!

I feel the same, and the fourth point is also reassuring.

The first two 'teasers' do seem rather bad when you think Gaiman has repeatedly gone on about how scary he wanted to make both the episode and the Cybermen. Seems like according to this reviewer at least he failed.

The third point though is much more promising. Yay.

I think a lot of fans, myself included, are going to be very disappointed with this episode simply because of the fact it's not The Doctor's Wife.

These ones are making me think!

I am eagerly awaiting this episode because its Gaiman, its Cybermen, its Wicket and Willow and its DOCTOR WHO.

But I feel the knives will be out for it just because of how loved The Doctors Wife was and some people love to pull someone down a peg or two just for the fun of it especially if they are popular. Plus it has been alot of peoples most anticipated episode this season due to the pedigree. It'll have to be a classic to avoid a battering in some quarters. Me? I just hope for a great episode and if its a classic all the better. It is certainly a more exciting prospect than the Cyberman episode which was in the same slot in S6...

We have had plenty of dark episode, not all of the episodes need to be dark.

Yes, but I'd rather none of them were CBBC-like.

That said, I'll reserve judgement and see how I find it next week.

No but when the writer has been repeatedly saying how scary it is, it probably should be more dark than light.

I have my reservations about this episode. Not because I think it will be bad; I think it will probably be very good (provided the children aren't too annoying), but because it is written by Neil Gaiman, so many people will be expecting it to live up to or exceed The Doctor's Wife and I'm not sure it can do this. Don't get me wrong, it might, but if it doesn't it's going to leave a lot of people disappointed and dwelling on the bad.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to it...I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that the Children don't make it too CBBC.

I find the 'like CBBC' comment equally irksome coming from a magazine like SFX as I do when its often trotted out on forums. What do they mean exactly? Some frame of reference would be helpful. Do they mean production wise? Tone? Acting? I haven't watched CBBC in many a year but its too vague a comment for me. Are we talking child friendly in a Goonies sense (ie fan-bloody-tastic) or in a Beethoven sense (not so much). Must try harder SFX.

Doesn't bother me! So long as I enjoy it! Selfish I know...

Oh dear.... the knives are out for this one it seems....

Matt Smith plays it 'very badly'? Having never seen him give anything other than an excellent and engaging performance this should be interesting...

I bet it's a complete over reacting as usual.

Based on this, I think I am going to stay away from all the spoiler free reviews and stuff from now on.I really don't get the point of them anymore tbh.

Looks like there are some touches that are more Mirrormask-ish than Neverwhere. And Jason Watkins, can't go far wrong there.

I'm not too worried about the kids because it's Gaiman. After all he's the only author whose kids books like Coraline and The Graveyard Book I've willingly read and enjoyed.

Gosh I was really looking forward to this one and I've read so many wonderful things about it. I've seen people say it's the best Cybermen episode in NewWho and someone else saying the quality is so high it's like a film. So if this review is anything to go by I will be very disappointed, my expectations are very high. Then again, they didn't give Journey To The Centre Of The TARDIS a very good review and it's my favourite episode of this half.

Or (as the Cultbox teasers seem to imply) maybe the Doctor does impressions of his previous incarnations ala Doc5 in Castrovalva? Hence 'badly done' rather than badly acted

Hasn't he already done this last series in a way though?

Cultbox hint about the part of Matt doing impersnations:

Spoiler
Matt does mean impersonations of a certain two actors.

Kinda sounds like someone didn't get the scene/s, doesn't it?...

I'd be worried if Ian Berriman DID like it. Won't go into details but I've seen enough of his reviews to know his taste in writers, Doctors etc. is very different to mine...and I'm in no way a Gaiman fan boy. I'm familiar with him only through The Doctor's Wife which, although excellent, was only my second favourite episode of Series 6.

What's up with SFX lately? Obviously they're entitled to their opinions, no-one likes everything... but some of their criticisms have been a bit peculiar.

Anyway, really really looking forward to this.

SFX and this writer in particular have been very scathing toward series 7B in particular...but a review doesnt necessarily mean universal opinion nor actuality.

Also i hate the term "oh its very CBBC" like anothe rposter said what does that even mean?? i mean CBBC has so much variation in entertainment even today you know? If it means its more "family entertainment" than "dark psychological horror" then dont we kinda expect that from Doctor Who anyway...i mean Crimson Horror today could be called "CBBC" but it had moments of the macabre and insane that can be translated across the board and done so perfectly too.

So i very much would say this will continue the high trend...Adored The Doctors Wife, i love Neils writings tyle too from the Sandman anyway...so i look forward just to how the cybermen will be taken and where they will be taken in the next stage of their evolution...and the idea of setting it on a planet designed like a Theme Park fascinates me too...i love theme parks so this is going to be just right up my street ....Cybermen, Matt going schitzo, Jenna in battle mode and some excellent (second week running) guest stars....lets have it!
