SERIES 7 - Possibly the best since Season 21
Shoppy
05-05-2013
I'm going to stick my neck out here and say I honestly think series 7 is the best series of Doctor Who since the show's return.

Cast aside opinions on the split for a moment and just look at the series as a whole...

7.1 - ASYLUM OF THE DALEKS (Mental Daleks!)
7.2 - DINOSAURS ON A SPACESHIP (Does what it says on the tin)
7.3 - A TOWN CALLED MERCY (Western with cyborg ...what more can you say?)
7.4 - THE POWER OF THREE (The Brigadier's Daughter !)
7.5 - THE ANGELS TAKE MANHATTAN (Companion send-off over and done with before the series finale)
7.6 - THE SNOWMEN (Christmas special sits nicely in the middle of the series)
7.7 - THE BELLS OF ST JOHN (Contemporary Earth new-companion story isn't episode 1 for a change)
7.8 - THE RINGS OF AKHATEN (Please let's see The Vigil again, IMO the coolest looking enemny of the new series)
7.9 - THE COLD WAR (20th century historical with pimped-up Ice Warrior)
7.10 - HIDE (Now I think about it, Primeval should sue :P )
7.11 - JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE TARDIS (More TARDIS, we always need more TARDIS)
7.12 - THE CRIMSON HORROR (How can anyone not find that scary? and some lovely jokes too)

...and we've still to see...

7.13 - NIGHTMARE IN SILVER (Gaiman + Cybermen)
7.14 - THE NAME OF THE DOCTOR

Now I think that's a great series, not dominated by a particular adversary though many classics (Daleks, Silurians, Weeping Angels, The Great Intelligence, Ice Warriors and Cybermen all in one series, I mean come on) make an appearance and not too heavy on the contemporary earth stories or overusing companions' families.
There's variation in the companion line-up with 3 main (Amy, Rory, Clara(s) ) and 5 recurring (River, Vastra, Jenny, Strax and soon to be seen again Kate Stewart) characters at various points.
Gatiss has written his best DW story yet in The Crimson Horror (and hstoricals aren;t usually my favourites) though I will say I think Neil Cross's stories may have worked better back in the 10th Doctor's day.
All in all though an absolute cracker of series.
Nice one Mr Moff, have a banana

...and then we've got the 50TH ANNIVERSARY to come as well.

I think I might have just done a little wee

Interesting comparison - Personally, I feel like Series 7 has been a great return to form. The more standalone stories and soft arc this time round has meant that I've got no problems in returning to rewatch them, as opposed to series 6 where the arc got in the way of me truly enjoying the non-arc related episodes...
So 3008

I respectively strongly disagree with the honourable gentlemen. For me I've only enjoyed Series Two less; and that's only because S7 hasn't had anything as bad as Fear Her or Love And Monsters (The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe excluded).

Up until the last couple episodes, it's felt like a number of disjointed tales, with some awful pacing issues, bolted together and not a coherent series of stories. I don't like how the Amy and Rory adventures took place months or even years apart and I especially don't like how we got a total overhaul half way through the series; The Ponds stayed five episodes too long. The Power of Three is a prime example of the pacing issues; not only do we have that ridiculous fix it ending, but they also don't even try to explain the hooverheads stealing patients and what's worse had The Doctor leave said patients all to die because unlike Brian they weren't in his little club.

I've really disliked the 45 minute movie feel they've gone for this series in general. There is a reason films are not 45 minute and TATMH is a prime example of why imo. It was incredibly rushed, and so, littered with plot holes - River conveniently forgetting her handy Vortex Manipulator when trapped in the hotel, despite clearly specifying earlier in the episode it wasn't effected by the time distortions is probably the most basic, obvious and annoying plot hole in the history of the show. We should have also have seen The Doctor vist Brian (a man who was either clearly not at his son's wedding or too paralytically drunk to remember the man who materialised in front of the whole reception party and invented the giraffe dance) to tell him about Rory's 'death'. Not just have him promise to keep them safe in one episode and then be too much of a coward to confront him when they 'die' in the next. A return of the two parter please Mr Moffat.

And while there have been no awful episodes, there also haven't been very many brilliant one's either. For me it's been a run full of beige, bland, run-of-the-mill, average, Doctor Who by-numbers stories. So as you can see I'm not particularly fond of this series, although 7b, especially since Cold War has been much improved and Clara is fantastic.

Sorry for the long answer but I felt it would be more constructive than "no it isn't, it's crap" etc.

Rushed, boring, dumbed down tripe. 45 minutes is not the way to do it. Bring back the old method of 4 to 6 episodes to a story.

Ummm...no. Just no
That would almost certainly completely destroy the show and get it cancelled.
The casual audience don't have the attention span to follow a story for 4-6 weeks in this day and age. I don't think a return to the 70s and 80s format could ever work.

45 minutes is adequate time to tell a story. It isn't always, but it definitely can.

I enjoyed the first half of Series 7, but I think this half has been rather underwhelming so far, with fairly consistent but average episodes and nothing truly standing out.

It just proves how stupid people have become if they can't follow a serial that tells a decent story over time.

I want more science in the programme. At the moment, it is very poorly written and makes me very annoyed.

I have to be honest, when I watch some of those old stories (particularly the Pertwee stories) they do feel very very slow and padded. TheSilentFez is right - the pace of TV has changed and the old story format wouldn't work today.

However, I do miss the two-parters that we've had since 2005. I don't see why we can't have a few of those.

It seems series 7 is a bit of a marmite series you either love it or you hate it. I for one love it, for all the reasons you just mentioned... I admit I was a worried that the second half wouldn't be as good as the first but after a slow start, Hide, JttcotTARDIS and Crimson Horror have been fantastic.

I think people will be disappointed with Nightmare in Silver for some reason, think too many people have overhyped it but we'll see!
