The Crimson Horror - The Reviews
Mulett
05-05-2013
A much better batch of reviews this week.

The Guardian: Period drama, comedy farce, Sherlock Holmes and gothic horror were mashed up together, and the dialogue fizzed with period and regional detail.

SFX: Adventures as irony-drenched as this would probably murder the show if mounted on a weekly basis – even a madman in a box needs something grounded at his core. But as a Bank Holiday weekend indulgence it’s a reet lovely slice of nonsense.

The Independent: Just like Hide which melded horror and science fiction wonderfully, this week did the same with a period drama horror slipping into steam punk. Gatiss drew wonderfully on some of the iconic things in this era without the story getting too ham Victoriana.

The Telegraph: In the hands of a lesser writer than Gatiss, The Crimson Horror could have buckled under the weight of its own ambition. But this crammed in idea after idea while still maintaining a terrific, breezy pace and delivering a fantastically satisfying story.

Daily Mirror: It's a happy Whovian that reports Gatiss is back on fine form with The Crimson Horror, a gleefully cackling and (in some ways) unique little tale, equal parts penny dreadful and knowingly silly sci-fi romp. If approached wearing the right hat, there's more than a bit of fun to be had here.

Radio Times: The Crimson Horror is hugely entertaining – a decent mystery, a logical plot, a dollop of camp but perhaps most rewarding of all it’s a danse macabre.

Glad to see such positive responses to the episode...I really, truly loved this one! It went to show me how hard I'd been trying to like a spate of recent episodes, that frankly have not been up to scratch.

One of the best in a long time, so I should hope it DID get praised!

I found it OTT and Matt Smith was too annoying.

It reminded me of the Unicorn and the Wasp..which i also hated. I can't stand farce. Brought back memories of the worst of the RTD era.

Worst episode this series IMO.
