What car mount / holder do you use?

There are loads to choose from.
Used a few products under a tenner and most are bobbins.

What do you recommend?

Brodit Proclip. Not cheap(around £40 all in) but the clip is tailored to your model of car, usually with a choice of fixing locations. The holder comes in passive and active versions and you can get them here:

Trailblazer for £12. Plugs into the AUX power output which also acts as the mount so suggest you twist the gooseneck arm so that the holder rests on part of the car console to help support the weight of the phone / sat-nav. Comes with inbuilt power lead for the device and also a USB port for powering / charging a second device.

The trouble with the Brodit phone holders is that they usually don't allow for a case. I use the car specific part (which costs around £15) and I've coupled it with this Arkon holder and this adapter. The holder comes with a ball and socket mount which can fix to an air vent. The adapter allows the ball and socket mount to fix to the Brodit mount using strong double-sided tape (like I use) or screws. Alternatively, you could just fit the phone holder straight to the Brodit mount with double sided tape. This holds my Galaxy S3 securely and at the perfect angle without obscuring the windscreen.

Saw one of these on a friends dashboard today. Fixed on like a limpet. Rock solid. That'll do for me !!

Think they are discontinued though as my Asda now have a smaller version in that is £7.

Some of the Brodit phone mounts do allow for cases, some are even made for the more popular phone/case combination.

You buy a car specific mount that clips onto part of your dash and doesnt cause any damage. This has a mounting surface to which you can then attach the device specific mount. These are either passive mounts (just hold the phone) or active mounts (they have a charger and built in usb/charger plug that the phone slides into). Some of the latter use cig plugs to charge, others are for wiring into the fuse board and others have a normal usb.

IMO there is nothing to beat a self adhesive magnet stuck to the dash and the corresponding thin metal disc stuck to the inside of a phone case. Costs all of a couple of pounds and it couldn't be easier to put the phone on and take it off. I've done it for years - despite people on forums like this saying you shouldn't put phones near magnets. Never had any trouble doing this (although I did once destroy the hard disk on an early iPod this way - forgot it was a hard drive!).

I don't understand why you would want to mount a phone in a car so it's visible, unless it's to use the GPS function. Is that what it's for?

While waiting for the Trailblazer I mentioned above I used a cheap suction-cup mount gaffa-taped to a weighted bean bag (never had a suction cup that I can trust). One problem with it though was the springy grip pressing on the button on the sides of the phone unless *very* carefully placed.

Just had a thought though and will be wielding the stanley knife to cut slots in the grip's rubber to solve that particular problem.

The bits of rubber thus cut free will then be glued to the bottom supports of the Trailblazer which has twin bar grips but also needs positioning so that the phone sits high and off the supports.

That, but music mainly. It connects via Bluetooth to my car stereo.

I currently use the Spiderpodium by Breffo. Very reasonable and very multi-functional! Priced at £14.95 you can't go wrong and best part is when you change your smartphone, you will not need to get a new mount for it.

Does it hold the phone securely? Looking at the vid it seems like it could easily drop out the bottom of the holder, especially when going over speed bumps etc.

I also use the iBolt dock for the S4 and before that the Note2.

May not suit some but its designed to fit even the largest of phones either bare or with a case. Its possible to insert the device with one hand and in some cases insert the usb charger lead with one hand too.
