I used to really enjoy The Apprentice and every series had one or two prize pillocks but I am convinced that after watching last nights episode its just about entertainment not business. You couldnt find more unpleasant self obsessed individuals who no doubt will make for good tv, The Apprentice does Big Brother really.
I will watch tonights episode but if its more of the same then it will be the last.

What took you so long to realise

Practically without exception when they appear on Your Fired they turn out to be nice intelligent people. The show "jumped the shark" when Katie Hopkins put in an appearance and how long ago was that?

I still enjoy it though, it's not to be taken seriously.

Last year I missed many episodes (more than 5, I guess). I don't even know who the winner was from last year.

SIGH. I knew there would be comments like this and I knew they would irritate me beyond belief.

Last year, The Apprentice was overly business focused and it got lambasted for being 'boring' and people didn't like the candidates. This year, the show's producers took on board that feedback and cast more interesting candidates and there are comments like these claiming its lost business credibility! It cannot win!

Choose one or the other, but don't criticise the programme for one aspect and then when it takes on board the feedback and goes the other way say comments like its "jumped the shark".

In any case, its been one episode. An assessment now is foolish and presumptuous. You have no idea what the rest of the series is like.

You can't have it both ways. Either its too business orientated or its too entertainment orientated. Make a decision which way you want it to be and stop whining for the sake of it.

Sorry for being harsh, but I have a big chip on my shoulder over the criticisms of last year.

EDIT: The winner last year was Ricky, capekdeh.

Sorry Siralan,

You seem perfect for the programme...did you apply?

I think so, at this stage they should just put in actors or scripted reality.

I'm sorry for my OTT reaction, but I spent half my time on the forums defending the show last year and it annoys me when people come back with the complete opposite criticism.

From my point of view, it seems as though people are criticising just for the sake of criticising.

It is possible that people will have differing opinions. I didnt think last year was too business orientated obviously others did.

Like I said every year has had a right tosser or two. This year it appears to be full of them. I dont think there is one person who I could say I hope they do well.

If its not careful it runs a risk of becoming a parody of itself.

Its always been a mix of the high flying and able, with the absurd and incompetent. Its confused by the Del Boy types who have elements of both traits, by Lord Sugar confusing the two, and sending the high flyers home, and by producers making one look like the other. Whats more interesting, is who doesn't come out in week one with the ridiculous hyperbole. There seem to be quite a few competent people this time - some hidden behind stereotypes for some viewers to write off early, and for others to discover later on?

Well that's fair enough. Sorry for my reaction.

Out if interest, did you enjoy last years?

Quite. Most eventual winners have a relatively low profile early on - Ricky last year was a rare exception - before gradually emerging as the 'entertaining' ones fall by the wayside. Tom Pellereau, Stella English, Simon Ambrose, Tim Campbell - hardly anyone had even noticed them after the first two weeks, let alone pegged them as a winner.

In terms of assessing both the candidates and the season as a whole, I always give it at least 3 weeks. Only then do we really start to get some insight into how things are going.

I don't know why you are all arguing among yourselves about this programme. The answer is simple i.e. It's run its day and is a tired hackneyed format now. I always believe in quitting while you are on top but in so many cases with TV programmes, they flog them to death.

Yes I did.

I dont mind the odd Stuart Baggs or Katie Hopkins just to spice it up, I guess the problem comes when bonafide candidates get fired to keep in those for entertainment.

Lets see how it goes tonight maybe they will all calm down a little.

It's always been like this. I think it's going downhill for me because I get more and more contemptuous of Sugar. He's successful but he's an arse, and his decisions rarely seem to match up with what we've seen in the episode. Either he fires people for shock value or it's badly edited. I wish they would get a businessman in that I could respect and whose opinion I'd value. I'm sure it's not just me who feels that way.

Tonight's show will feature a brewery, according to Lord Sugar

...and no, they couldn't organise a piss up within in

I knew that teacher would be first to go

They were not going to like being spoken to, like a bunch of primary school kids

God... what an annoying woman... feisty though

Maybe with Tom, but if anything Stella and Tim were far more visible in the first few weeks than at any other time in the process. Tim PM'd twice in the first 4 episodes, then spent most of the rest of the series being taught by Ben how to do really basic things, and of course Stella "did the figures", got loads of praise for it, then "saved the boys team" all in the first two hours. Even Simon, whilst in the background, got a lot of positive stuff (being the best salesman on his team in Week 1, coming up with a potentially task-winning idea Week 2, which got ignored by Rory to his cost) at the very beginning.

Also, I wouldn't call any of them 'caricatures' as such apart from Jason, Zee and Alex.

I love the Apprentice every year - even last year, I still loved it even though it was more business orientated. Last year still had some funny moments, despite the candidates being quite competent. Even on its ninth series and having watched all the junior versions, the show still doesn't feel tired to me - I'm still entertained by it, which is strange as I've got a bit bored of other reality formats like X Factor, Britain's Got Talent and Big Brother (I still watch all three of those, but I don't have the enthusiasm for them that I once had).

I still find it hugely entertaining, but do find myself mesmerised by Alex and the girls, whose features are so smooth and exaggerated they look like Spitting Image puppets!

I went off the Apprentice for many years because I thought it was too geared towards entertainment, but having noticed episode one was on tv last night I watched it and was actually quite impressed. It hasn't really changed at all since series 2/3 when i stopped watching.

I've always enjoyed the show, especially at the beginning when it was more business orientated, and gauged it on my work experience, but it changed to a mix of business and entertainment over the years, which gave a lot of hilariously funny episodes, and its this angle I look for in more showing of it.

The contestants remind me of the type that end up in BB, so one gets used to the ones in the Apprentice, where you like them or not, or want them gone for good.

However, if the show stayed all business, it would be fine for a short time, but then you'd feel worn out watching it, so mixing it is very sound imo.

Fair points. I'd forgotten about the whole "Stella saves the boys" and the "why don't you do the modelling?" debacle.

It has as a semi-serious business programme; the earlier series had some decent business situations as tasks and people who largely tried to impress by acting professionally, with the odd weirdo whose ineptitude was entertaining.
But the weirdos stood out.
Now they are nearly all weirdos and egotistical, domineering behaviour is encouraged. The tasks are obviously designed to highlight stupid decisions, lack of any real common sense & personality clashes.
All of which is very entertaining, but I remember in earlier series being able to have a sensible conversation with my teenage kids about various aspects of selling, marketing etc - which they were really interested to hear about on the show & I think they learned some things. I felt that a more positive message was being sent out.
Now I worry that school kids about to embark upon careers are being given the message that you need to be loud, gobby, devious & manipulative to succeed, and your actual lack of talent can be glossed over. Can just see them now marching into interviews & making prats of themselves.
So for me it's still entertaining but sending out a very odd message.
