Keeping Cats From Climbing Out Of Window
Spider Rico
12-05-2013
We have 3 cats. One of them is happy being mostly an indoor cat and going out in the back garden in the nice weather. The other two, one of them is allowed out on a morning and usually comes back in at lunchtime. The third is the 'wildest' of the three and we try to keep her in all the time. She got out today and within the space of an hour had killed a bird, brought it to the patio and pooed in the neighbour's garden

The second two sometimes 'escape' by squeezing through the small gap when the window in the utility room is open. We only open that window to put the dryer hose through when we are drying clothes. I always make sure the door to the room is closed, but my wife and son are more absent-minded and often forget.

It stresses me out when they get out there(especially the youngest cat) so would like to deter them. I tried spraying Get Off spray on the length of the brick window ledge, but when I allowed them in there, they still both went out The younger one hesitated for a while, but eventually decided to go out.

I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to keep them from getting out of that window. There isn't much of a window sill, the window is directly behind a sink area. Like I said, I only open it enough to get the dryer hose out and they squeeze out through that gap.

You can get these box things to put on your tumble dryer pipe for people who don't have access to put it outside.

Argos sell them for about £15.

I considered getting one of those a few months ago when we had problems with too much condensation forming, but ended up just getting a longer pipe. From what I understand, almost all of them still create condensation and we don't want any whatsoever in that room.

Reading around elsewhere online, most people seem to recommend a mesh screen, but that wouldn't work for us because of the aforementioned dryer hose

Why do you want to keep one of your cats in and allow the other one out?

Ideally, they'd all be indoor cats but the one we let out miaows to go outside every single day, and has done since he was extremely young. We want to keep the other one in because we don't feel she is safe outside and her behaviour can be a bit wild(she was a stray before we got her).

Can you cut a hole in the glass to fit the hose through?

Next door neighbour has put a mesh/net type thing over her window opening so her cat cannot leap. Seems to be fixed on a wooden frame that she puts in place when the window is open, bit like secondary double glazing.

In the actual glass? I wouldn't do that because there will constantly be a draft in there.

I wonder if I could get a mesh screen and cut through that? I came across a site that makes custom ones, maybe I should ask them.

Does the tumble dryer have a back entry vent(unused) cover you could remove , then vent to outside.(core hole thro wall & fit vent cover). My tumble has a front or back vent.
