You say that the Blu-ray player's output is set to 1080i, but is there a separate upscaling setting? There is a chance that although your Blu-ray player is set to 1080i the DVD upscaling feature may not actually be turned on, reverting instead to 576p. I use a PS3 for Blu-rays, and even though it is set to play these at 1080p there are separate upscaling options for DVDs. When you are playing a DVD, does pressing the info button on your TV remote tell you what resolution is being recieved? |

OK...thanks everyone for weighing in and helping me understand what's been going on
Having tested exhaustively, and sat flicking between different inputs for an hour or so, I’ve come to two conclusions. 1. My TV actually does a really good job of upscaling DVD, and always has. So the difference between DVD upscaled by my TV and DVD upscaled by my new BR player isn’t very great. 2. My TV is rubbish compared to my sister’s TV at actually being a TV. So although it’s done a valiant job of upscaling, it isn’t actually displaying half as nice an image as her TV. Because her TV is just better. Conclusion: if we want our DVDs to look like they do on her TV, we need a new TV. Thanks everyone for your help and patience, it was really helpful in getting me to understand what was going on! |

...We have the same Blu Ray player. If the upscaling I was already getting from my old DVD player + TV is as good or better than the Blu Ray player can produce, then what's making the display for my sister so much better is her TV's ability to upscale BEYOND what the Blu Ray player can do....

I don't think I'm being completely naive in expecting to see an increase in quality.... a lot of people commented on the quality of the upscaling - ...Hell, plenty of people in this thread have commented that they saw an improvement when they moved to Blu Ray. For me, there's precisely no change.
How is your TV set up. Do you have all the picture enhancements switched on, and the detail level cranked up, and the overscan set to minimise black bars??? All these things mess up scaling and picture quality. DVD scaled properly can look extremely impressive. The detail won't be there as in a Blu-ray of course. But nonetheless good scaling can really make the most of the format on 1080p and HD Ready displays. |
