Ahh... so no true idea what it costs to neuter an animal if you work full time. Most places will only pay towards costs IF you are claiming benefits (I know, I asked the RSPCA and was told I don't meet their "criteria" as I worked full time and already had gotten my kitten microchipped) and Cats protection will normally only give you vouchers if you are on benefits/ low income as well.

It wasn't a complaint, more an observation

Both of mine are neutered, chipped, vaccinated, wormed, flea'd and are taken to the vets when needed. They are also both insured, something I was very grateful for when one got sick, and the final bill was £750! Thankfully I just had to pay the insurance excess

Very true. I wouldn't even dream of claiming anything from Cats Protection, even if they gave vouchers to people in full time work, because they need all the money they can get for the welfare of the cats in their care. I actually donate to them by monthly direct debit and I wouldn't like to think that my donation is contributing to neutering costs for owners who should be responsible enough to pay themselves. I personally don't believe people should take on pets if they can't afford to pay for their total care - it's different if people suddenly and unexpectedly fall on hard times (eg redundancy), I have no problems with them trying to hold on to their pets and claiming whatever they can to assist them in this.

I last had a kitten back in 1995 and I remember then that her neutering cost me around £60. My 3 current cats were already neutered when I adopted them but their yearly boosters and check-ups cost me close to £200. However, I live in the South-East where vets charge a lot more than in other parts of the country.

Maybe but when my parents got their cats neutured (they always had cats in pairs) the vets always gave a discount because they were having two done at the same time. I dont know about all vets but our local one was keen to neuter female cats especially because they had to deal with so many cats that had several litters that in some cases they would offer really cheap neuturing when people bought their cats in.

Surely a one off payment is cheaper in the long run than having several litters of kittens? It also saves the female cats going through several unecessary labours and saves kittens being abandoned or worse.

The PDSA and Blue Cross vet clinics can do inexpensive/free neutering depending upon the circumstances.

Many thanks for all your views folks.

No little ones yet and i took them both to the Vet and 1 of them is having kittens but not the other one.

1 of them is being done next week and the other will be done after she has given birth.

i understand the views of people who have said about they should have been both done before getting pregnant and yes maybe i was silly in not doing that before so do hold my hands up to that.

i am hoping to keep the kitten or kittens so will get them done when they are old enough as well.

I would like to point out that our cats have a very loving home and do care about them a lot.

my boys were done a year ago! I was surprised at how cheap it was and enquired about the female price too (not that I've got a girl!) I think it depends n your vet, mine is more expensive for other things, but most should be able to get the vouchers, even if not on benefits.

That is good to know OP, sadly not all cat owners are as responsible but well done for wanting to keep the kittens.

Piccies when they arrive please

It can happen sometimes. You sound like the sort of person that cares. Enjoy the kitten

Reading the later comments here - I can't see why this comment should be criticised. It is a fact of life. If you have unneutered female cats and they go out - then they will become pregnant. If their owner is able to rehome the kittens, then fine. But if not - then they will end up as another burden on the already stretched cat rescue homes and may risk euthanasia.

It isn't cheap to take care of two pregnant cats and their offspring - so unless planned, surely neuturing is the only responsible option for owning adult female cats?

Seriously, you are urinating in a very strong breeze when it comes to responsibility, care and sense about animals here most of the time. After all, it doesn't matter if there is already thousands of cats unwanted/in rescues etc - it's all about self indulgence and cute kittens. How boring to consider any other factor! But thanks for understanding my point!

No you can't upload pictures on this forum. You have to put them on a hosting site like tinypic and then put a url link to the picture on here.

They do grow very quickly!

It may seem a bit soon, but it might be a good idea to start finding homes for them (even though they can't go until they are at least 8 weeks old). Do you plan to keep any of them?
