I would like to use a pen drive to run a operating system (windows XP) on a PC I'm building, it's more of a project than anything else, apart from getting a copy of XP onto a stick which I can do what else do I initially need to do?

If you mean to run XP as a live operating system from the usb flash drive then I don't believe it is possible. If however you mean to install it from the usb stick then you can do so in various ways such as using Rufus http://rufus.akeo.ie or Sardu http://www.sarducd.it/ or Yumi http://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-mu...t-usb-creator/

Linux based systems such as Linux Mint , LXLE, PCLINUXOS
can be run as a live operating system from a usb stick using the above mentioned sardu, yumi, and also unetbootin.

According to this page it's possible with a combination of BartPE and some other tools. Haven't tried the USB version myself, but I can vouch for BartPE as I've used it from CD on a number of occasions.

Have Win 7 and XP Pro boot Pendrives.

Both created using BARTPE - using instructions found somewhere on the internet (Google BartPE and usb drivbe).

Took some time, but work faultlessly (However need the PC to be able to boot from USB - which some older ones don't!)

Interesting, although you need a >20GB USB 3 stick, plus Windows 8 Enterprise and all the deployment tools - out of reach of most home users.
