With the release of arguably the year's most anticipated album in Ireland (boo-yeah, fantastic surprise for me in the morning when I logged onto iTunes! ), New Zealand, Australia and five other countries today, I think this place could use a thread to discuss this album, Random Access Memories.

In my opinion, I think this album is bloody fantastic, it's absolutely beautiful to listen to. The effort that has been put into the songs and the album as a whole is palpable, even from the first listen. It is simultaneously nothing like the work they've done before and yet typically Daft Punk (like how in the opening track, you can hear party-goers enjoying having fun and enjoying themselves, a nod to Homework's Revolution 909 perhaps). I simply could not imagine anyone else making an album like this. I was afraid that by having so many collaborations on the album that the end product would be somewhat diluted and although this is actually true to a point, everything melds together wonderfully and it all just becomes this rich, textured, heartfelt aural treat.

I've listened to the album thrice today and for myself personally, the stand-out track by a mile is Doin' It Right (feat. Panda Bear). Few songs make me feel emotional. Fewer songs still make me feel happy. And yet this song literally had me grinning within the first ten seconds.

Doing it right, everybody will be dancing and will feeling it right
Everybody will be dancing and be doing it right
Everybody will be dancing and you're feeling all right
Everybody will be dancing tonight

It seems corny when you read those lyrics, but listening to it... well my mind was blown, I have to say.

Overall, an instant classic in my opinion. In my books, it has bettered Homework and Human After All and is, at this moment, on a par with Discovery for me. Though I can actually see it overtaking Discovery to become my favourite album of Daft Punk's.

If you're in any way fond of Daft Punk, you owe it to yourself to listen to this gem of an album and perhaps pick up a copy.

Due for UK release on Monday the 20th May, Canadian and US release on Tuesday the 21st May.

Not my bag.
I prefer albums with proper lyrical content, good natural vocals and real instruments.. NOT 75 minutes worth of two French 40 year old blokes randomly tapping buttons on a mixing desk & using vocoders & autotune.

I do too. Especially from 3:00 to 4:15 with the instrumental section. A minute or so of pure euphoria!

I'm guessing you've not heard the album as there's plenty of live tracks and untreated vocals on there.

The only unreal instruments they used on the album were drum machines and synthesizers. And of course vocoders on some of the vocal content.

The album is excellent. I have been listening to it all week. My favourite songs are in Order

Instant Crush
Within
Contact
Beyond
and the rest is then equally as excellent. What a great album.

It reminds me of a electro hip hop 70s/80s retro style album but extremely emotional. It really hits you when listening. This so far is album of the year.

I cant stop listening to instant crush!!

The whole album was/is available to stream for free on i-Tunes during the past week.Click on the Daft Punk banner which should appear on rotation at the top portion of the main Home page & listen to the whole shaboodle via the link provided.

Thanks, but I'm still a sucker for tangible objects.

Admittedly, pre-ordering from Amazon isn't exactly travelling back from town on the bus, excitedly reading the sleeve notes in anticipation, but it beats downloading for me.

I'm not a huge Daft Punk fan but "Get Lucky" is lovely, very funky. May be down to Nile Rogers though, but they are clever chaps.

I'm a big fan of Daft Punk, but no matter how much I try (and believe me, I really have) I just can't get into this album. It's very slick, for sure, and some songs are fantastic, but too many of the songs are just plain weak and don't leave me with any impression. They obviously had a clear idea of what they wanted to do with this record, which is a great thing, but surely a few upbeat tracks wouldn't have gone amiss? Maybe it's just me

One of the best pop/dance albums in years. Has a bit of a Pet Shop Boys vibe too. Touch (track 7) reminds me of the Pet Shop Boys. If Pet Shop Boys and Daft Punk worked on an album this would be the result.

Get Lucky is a song with an actual tune - something you remember and can hum. I remember the old days when pop songs got into the charts with melodies, actual hooks you remember. Not songs with naff rap sections, crappy duets and explicit lyrics. If any song deserved to do well in the current urban pop era it's Get Lucky. It's a throwback to earlier times when the melody and production stood out. Thanks Daft Punk for bringing back the good old days.

I've played this quite a bit over the weekend. Overall I'm very impressed with it, the only track I'm not that jazzed on really is 'move yourself to dance'. I really like the classic jazz influences and guitar licks, very well done.

Standout track for me is Instant Crush, I quite like Eugene Cernan's dialogue at the start of Contact.

To the poster who thinks they don't play real instruments....I'd like to see you play the guitar solo from 'Digital Love'. To say it's just a load of easily arranged computer music is quite far off the mark.

I like the overall feel and atmosphere of the album, and standout tracks for me are Instant Crush and Doin' It Right, but it's not going to be an album I listen to a lot all the way through; it's more background music to me, and I prefer albums I can focus my whole attention on.

All in all I think it's a little bit over hyped, but there's some good stuff on it and at least they are trying to produce something accessible yet intelligent, that combines retro and future.

Just got in from work and I have the CD in front of me.

Like a giddy child, I just popped it into my laptop's cd/dvd drive and...........it popped right back out again.

Hmmm.......I'll try that again, it's never done this before.

Damn, it popped out again. Let me try a different CD.

No! It's not accepting that either!

So in conclusion. I've no idea what the album's like because I can't play the sodding CD.

I guess I'll have to listen to a crappy Youtube version instead.

Instant Crush is absolutely sublime.

The Strokes meets Daft Punk. I'm in heaven.

I streamed 4 times last week, and I finally bought it first thing this morning and I've been listening on repeat constantly... oh, I just love it. I truly, honestly adore it. The structure of it is perfect and it's such a full, cohesive piece of work that despite having brilliant individual songs littered throughout, is somehow elevated to more than the sum of its parts when heard as a complete album. It's my favourite album of the year so far, as I fully expected it to be.

Highlights:

Giorgio by Moroder
Within
Instant Crush
Lose Yourself to Dance
Touch
Get Lucky
