You should feel bad OP. If you take on an animal, you take it on for life, not until it inconveniences you and you don't want it anymore. I'm not the best pet owner in the world, I don't feed a hand cooked diet, I do go out to work, I don't walk my dogs twice a day or even every day. But just getting rid of your pets is really, really low.

Yes i was negative and frustrated, i hold my hands up to that. My cats are treated well. Get fed nice food and tins of tuna once or twice a week. They dont get hit or anything like that.
I have had them for eight years, so its not as if its i have had them six months and now cant be bothered.
Because i am thinking of rehoming them i am the worst person in the world. As i stated it is our last option, but people dont seem to pick up on that, just happy to lambast me.
So i am pretty much done with this thread.
To be honest you sound stressed your cats are stressed I think it would be best to rehome both cats.Good luck whatever you decide.
You can get a thing (sorry can't remember the name) that you plug in that will kill any rodent within five metres, good luck whatever your decision.

The things that you plug in dont kill rodents..wish they did..unfortunately they just make high frequency noises and deter them coming into your house..but dont know if they would also be heard by the cats and drive them potty.

When they fist came out people who kept hamsters and gerbils etc said that it killed them. I have one and keep cats and it has no affect on them.

I think what you have said is a lot of hot air. It sounds like an excuse to have an easy life. Animals, children can be hard work but to me that's a given and you have had them years so you know that. I would never ever give up on an animal or a child because I am an adult.

it would have stressed out the pet rodents considerably.
which could have led to their deaths.
though to be fair, even filling a beaker up with water from the tap can cause sounds similar to sonic repellent devices which cause stress to captive rodents.
i think the general thinking these days is not to use them if you have small animals as pets.

We have mouse traps round the house to catch the ones he loses intrest in. But the thing is when he just leaves the mice or rat and the little man finds it. Few times now i have had "Dad, found it !" proudly holding mouse torso.
I cant be having mice running round the house or the kid finding and picking up mouse guts etc etc. Even as i type i know there is a mouse behind the fridge, Trap down.
Last of all is the fighting between the two of them. They are both as bad as each other. Somes time it can be quite vicious. Few vet trips. We have tried lots of different calming things such as plug in's etc etc. When the kid goes to bed and its time to relax, we cant as the grumpy one is on the couch and he just wants to sit on the couch as well, its battle time lots of deep belly growling and swiping.
So with all that said its causing myseld and my partner stress. At the moment its hard to relax, its either fighting,dead things, trying to stop her trashing the house, or cleaning up cat pee without heaving and trying to get rid of that smell.
This has been going on for far to long now. So i am seriously thinking that when we get back from short trip at the end of the month that i am call the cat protection lady to get them re-homed.
I feel bad but like i say the stress they are causing is just too much.
Any thoughts anyone ?”

Yes...take responsibility for your pets! I can't believe you are whinging on like you are! With all the cats waiting for homes already?! Disgusting attitude!
OP, I'm sorry for going a little OTT there but I'm such a cat person and it makes me angry when people don't want cats anymore for WHATEVER reason. I could NEVER give my cats up.
At least you'll take them to the CPL (I'm a supporter and they do great work) and I'm glad you don't mis-treat them.

Me too, I am a cat person and I get so annoyed when people talk about rehoming their cats. My current cat is a rescue cat and she has brought so much joy to the family. I would never give her up.
I am a mother..a "children" person..wouldnt see harm come to any animals but my children always have and always will come first..a stressed mother finding bits of mice around the house that a toddler is wandering around and picking up does not equal a calm atmosphere for a child to grow up in...so I am in agreement..find a new home for the cats for the childs sake.
Try a product called Urine Off for Cats you can get it at good pet stores or on-line. I've used it and it does work really well.
your older cat sounds stressed. They have a young interloper, a young child and your house has been redecorated. You need to give your cats their own space, their own beds and somewhere quiet for them to go then you wouldn't have to fight with them for the sofa. When you took on your cat you took on their faults too and cats are sensitive to change and their owners being stressed(I bet you shout and get angry at the cats too). As for the mice that is all part of being a cat owner I am afraid, I have had to take a fireplace apart to get a mouse out in the past.
And old cats have trouble being rehomed, even not so old cats can stay in rescue centres for months if not up to a year. So make sure that you have tried everything before going down that route
