Not sure what it is you are trying to say as I was simply comparing my ping times using 4G LTE to my landline broadband connection as in example in saying that the latter offers better ping times. The fact that mine if a fiber optic line is not really relevant. It's simply what I have.

That said, how do you figure a fiber broadband connection is slow? The fastest Internet services in the world are usually based on fiber optic infrastructure.

I don't know what you are talking about since most Americans still have a landline connection in addition to their cellular connection.

You said your LTE gets you 34Mbps and your landline fibre gets you half as much.

I'm just surprised you are getting such a slow speed (~17Mbps) on a fibre connection. Even ADSL2+ and HSDPA can do 17Mb.

I'm very tempted to use my Three totally unlimited data plan to tether my iPad too than my Sky Broadband.

I subscribe to Sky Go Extra and when you download a programme it tells you the speed it is downloading the data at. On my broadband I get 1.4mbps. When i tried tethering the iPad to my phone to download I was getting over 3mbps.

I'm just worried that even though I'm on a totally unlimited plan, if I start downlaoding 5gb of data a month they may ask me to stop.

If so then it actually is truly unlimited. I've used 150GB in a month before. And i know people who use more. 5GB is nothing.

Home Internet connections, whether through cable, DSL, fiber or satellite have always been offered with differently priced speed plans. I am at one of the lower tier plans. Cellular plans, at least here in America, are not offered at different levels of speed.

I knew it was totally unlimited but for some obscure reason, I can't get out of my head that if you go downloading crazy they'll ask you to stop. If I did all my downloading via The One Plan I'd probably use about 10GB a month with all the programmes I take from Sky Go Extra (which vary between 550 - 650mb each).

How would I connect all of the devices in my house that need to be online to one 4G phone? Unless the mobile providers start selling 4G receivers with a built in router and unlimited data its not going to be practical.

Oh actually it would be quite easy via tethering I can think of one way of the top of my head. Have a router works as access point which is connected to the tethering system and then you would be able do no problem.

Generally the way it works here is if your device supports 4g LTE and that's what your provider can offer then that's what you get. My iPad's data plan is simply for data. Whether I choose to run it in 3G mode (no point doing that) or 4g LTE mode the price is the same.

It not really as he just said America pay no more for 4G. Only Three look like they are offering 4G at same price as 3G. EE certainly charge more so are Vodafone and hasn't been confirmed if O2 are one way or another but likely they are going charge extra for it.

No, that's not what I said. The previous poster read my post correctly. 4G LTE is a replacement for 3G, it isn't meant as another system that will run indefinitely alongside 3G for a cheaper price.

As I said, there is no such a thing as a 3G *and* a 4G LTE data plan for my iPad. It's simply a data plan that supports both for one price.


Where are you getting that from? I know of no major carrier here in America offering separate 3G and 4G plans.

Thank you I thought I had read right and my friends told me same thing. Over in uk it not seen as a replacement more like an upgrade as some networks don't even have reliable 3G coverage yet I imagine that is why they are charging extra for it as a lot has of work is going into mast being upgraded. I expect in UK we will see 2G/3G/4G running side by side for a long while. When I know in America companies are already considering shutting down 2G and from I hear Verizon are even considering shutting down 3G as well. Only reason I think 4G is an alternative to fixed line is because I know for quite a lot of people in UK they can't get fast speeds or solid connections. Where as 98% of UK population of UK is meant be getting 4G coverage by 2015. Mine is somewhat problematic I rarely go a week without it going down for 3-4 hours at a time sometimes twice in a week occasionally goes down for a day once even a week and still got charged full monthly price.

So far my 4G LTE coverage has been wonderful on my iPad and with no down time that I have run into. 34 Mbps on an iPad 4, which is my main computer now, is pretty darn awesome. My signal is also stronger with 4G LTE.

My landline has never gone down in many years of DSL use and and over a year on fiber. My provider would credit generously for any down time too.

Clearly shows how different company is than it was down for a week once but wouldn't knock me anything of bill or credit me anything.

Yeah they said to that they can only give a credit if an engineer has been out and assesses it is there fault it wasn't worth the cost of an engineer out.

If people switched over to virgin mobile or 3, they would get unlimited mobile internet.

I have a samsung galaxy s3 and a nokia asha 300. I use the Galaxy for
internet (which is unlimited) and texts with virgin mobile, but I do not use it for calls.

The nokia phone I use for internet as back up to the samsung, and calls.

Strange that they would need a technician (engineers here in America are something different ) to come out to determine if your service is down. My provider can always see what is going on with my connection. Sounds like BS on their part.
