Who blew up the Tardis?
Chrisgooner
19-05-2013
As I have been discussing in another thread do we know who blew up the Tardis in series 5?
If it has been explained my interpretation is that the silence blew up the Tardis to attempt to kill the doctor. The alliance thought it was the doctor and so they tried to capture him to stop him form destroying the universe. Presumably the Silence didn't know blowing up the Tardis would destroy the universe. Which does seem a bit odd considering how much they know.

You're right. And there's also the question of how they did it.

Why would the Silence abduct River and train her to kill The Doctor if their plan was to blow up the TARDIS?

Also if the Silence had tried to blow up the TARDIS presumably Moffat would have thrown in (at least) a quick line referencing that in A Good Man Goes to War or The Wedding of River Song just so that loose end could be tied up.

So we don't know then yet?

Or maybe it was the GI's influence that did it, and Clara (supposedly) fixed that somehow behind the scenes, just like she's retconned into having done since the very beginning of the story?

God frigging knows. It's been three series and three years and it's still not clearly been answered on screen!

It's been so long now I guess we're supposed to assume it was The Silence's first attempt to kill The Doctor, and when that failed they moved onto Plan River. Why Moffat doesn't just write a line specifying such I don't know.

If does seem bit stupid though. You would have thought the silence would know it would destroy the universe. Perhaps it was them and it has just not been explained clearly. The alliance didn't want to trap the doctor because they thought he would answer the question, they didn't know about that they thought he would destroy the universe, presumably by blowing up the Tardis. So I suppose it is possible he Silence blew it up in an attempt to kill him and they didn't know it would destroy the universe

Steven Moffat has explained more about the long-standing mysteries that will be wrapped up at Christmas in The Time of the Doctor.

Quote:
““It’s not obstructive – if you didn’t remember any of that stuff or care about that stuff it would still be fine. If you’ve been sitting there saying, “Who blew up the TARDIS?” then you’ll get it.””

...AND SO THE SAGA ENDS.

While never specifically said on screen (Though the voice saying Silence will Fall was a pretty big clue) Promo material for Series 6 on the BBC website did state that the Silence were the ones who did it.

Of course come Christmas it remains to be seen if Moffat has stuck to this idea or changed his mind.

I just assumed it blew up on its own, like a car catching fire, like it wasn't an intentional event caused by anyone

So if a disembodied voice said "Your Car is about to catch Fire" just before your car catches fire you wouldn't be a bit suspicious that some one had done it deliberately?

Really? I heard it was uneducated teenage single mums with five children, living off the state in their council houses!

I'm not up on all the spoilers, but now that we know the Timelords are back (albeit frozen in a painting with their planet), could it not be that they are behind the Silence? That they are manipulating events in a rather complicated predestination paradox so that they are retrieved from the Time War?

It doesn't matter that nobody has extracted them from the painting yet. At some point in the Doctor's personal future, it will happen. An examination of events will lead them to the conclusion that they need to be the ones responsible for the conspiracy of the Silence (the Alliance). Remember, the Alliance was not clear on who had blown up the Tardis, though it was clear to the viewer that the Silence (non-speaking aliens) were responsible. The Alliance blamed the Doctor, as it was his Tardis.

If the Timelords are trying to keep a low-profile (hint: stay Silent) then they could be behind the conspiracy letting deluded others carry out the events of the predestination paradox.

The cracks in time doubtless led the Doctor's Tardis to Amy's house in the first place, resulting eventually
in River Song (agent of the Silence), who becomes the deadly assassin (2 attempts on his life, one successful).

It appears a third attempt by the conspiracy will be successful on Trenzalore.

Maybe we'll find out in about ten years time. Then we and the general audience will be saying "eh...when did the tardis blow up???" Then we will have to rewatch episodes from ten years ago to remind us. Result !!

10 days until we find out or 10 days until we have another Moffat quote which is a blatant misdirect.

Quote:
“If you’ve been sitting there saying, “Who blew up the TARDIS?” then you’ll get it.””
