Was Hurt's Doctor in the room in "The God Complex"?
SillyBillyGoat

Sorry if a thread is unnecessary, I was unsure of which thread to add this to as there are several about John Hurt. Feel free to merge if necessary, mods.

Anyway, I've heard some theories that perhaps Hurt's incarnation was the unseen fear in the room in the aforementioned episode. It does make sense that the memory of him would be the Doctor's greatest fear. Does anyone else think this might have been what was in there?

Obviously I'm not stating this as fact, there could be endless possibilities, but it's fun to ponder.

Wasn't it later revealed to be young Amy, to represent the way she and previous companions idolise him?

Well, that's what I took from the episode anyway.

Would be great if they tie that clip into the 50th, means Amy and Rory would get a very brief appearance without spoiling their proper exit.

If it wasn't the "Hurt" Doctor it was always The Doctor in there is I've always thought The Doctor's one fear is The Doctor himself as he knows what he is capable of

No, that was Amy's room, as in little Amelia waiting for the Doctor.

We never saw what was inside the Doctor's room.

No I think that was Amy's room - representing her fear of being abandoned by the Doctor

No that was Amy's room.

You know before this thread I had completely forgotten all about the Doctor's room.

So did I. On a rewatch now I will sit there and go.."ahh I know what's in the room now"

I would LOVE them to do that! In fact, now you said it, it HAS to happen

Personally I don't think it was him. I think it's probably something to do with him, wether it was him dieting old in a bed, or him and river song doing something- which is why he put a "do not disturb"sighn on the door!

I doubt the Doctor would fear dying of any sort, even being old in a bed and I also doubt that River would ever be involved in his greatest fear, out of all his companions, she's just one, so I doubt it would be specific to one companion. The idea that it's the Hurt Doctor is a real possibility, and I reckon it's along those lines. We never saw quite how bad what Hurt did was (though we suspect it was

ending the Time War
) and if that is the case then I suspect it won't necessarily be him either.

I do think it will be some form of the Doctor himself, maybe him genuinely being/acting evil as opposed to doing bad things for the right reasons, which is what I suspect Hurt has done, as I suspect if what that incarnation had done had been so bad that the Doctor couldn't understand/condone it, he'd never be able to live with himself (although again, maybe he still can't).

The beauty of it is we will never find out and so your imagination can run as wild as you want it to.

I don't know if it'll ever be confirmed, but it makes perfect sense. 21st Century Who hasn't been subtle about pushing how badly the Time War affected the Doctor, especially Nine and Ten. Eleven has seemed less angry/upset by it day to day, maybe because he's more distant from the events.Until late November anyway...

That would scare anyone!

i always thought it was just himself staring back, no specific incarnation.

It would make sense. At the time I thought it might have been the Dream Lord, but subjectively this would still be the same idea, a better one probably.

I doubt that would be shoehorned into the episode, though. I personally don't like it when a vague idea is later showcased as a plot point, no matter how much sense it makes, or how clever it seems. In all likelihood, it's just serendipity - the result of 'following the groove', as it were. At the top of my head, LOST did this many times. Just seems...smug. Undeservedly so.

But nice thought though

Though he all but says it's himself. Now we know about the Hurt Doctor it makes sense that it was that incarnation he saw in the room. Moffat may even have had that idea at the time.

On another note, is anyone else glad that it wasn't the 8th Doctor who committed those dark acts at the end of the Time War? In the past I have imagined him being the one removing the Daleks and Time Lords and it doesn't sit right with the character. Yes I know he's the same character as all other Doctors, all of them very capable of darkness when needed, it just seems better to me that it will be a twisted version of the Doctor we haven't seen who does it.

I'd like to think if the John Hurt Doctor had been in that room, he would have given the Eleventh Doctor a thumbs up to say it's all ok, nothing to worry about, The Doctor always finds a way.

I'd always assumed it was himself, but had gone down the Valeyard route. This is a much better idea!

I allways thought he saw himself. He knows what he has done before and is capable of doing again. Thats why he has his freinds and treis to keep control of his emotions.
Thats why powerfull adjectives like "storm" and "fire" are used to describe him. He has the power to do a lot of good but also a lot of bad.
