So brilliant, the songs send shivers down my
spine
from way back in 1997 ....

All songs written by Richard Ashcroft, except where noted.

Bitter Sweet Symphony (Jagger/Richards/Ashcroft) – 5:58
Sonnet – 4:21
The Rolling People (The Verve) – 7:01
The Drugs Don't Work
Catching the Butterfly (The Verve) – 6:26
Neon Wilderness" (Nick McCabe, The Verve) – 2:37
Space and Time – 5:36
Weeping Willow – 4:49
Lucky Man – 4:53
One Day – 5:03
This Time – 3:50
Velvet Morning – 4:57
Come On (The Verve) – 15:15

how did mick and keef get a credit in there ?

While commercially Urban Hymns is the most well known album by the Verve, I always thought A Northern Soul was the better album.
Ashcroft is a superb songwriter and a proper hero of mine.

Was talking about this bloke with a mate the other day. Where is he these days? I can't remember the last time I heard anything from him.

He did a few acoustic gigs a few months ago in Europe. He is working on a new album and I believe these gigs were used to test some of the new material.
That's what it says on the fan sites anyway.

Ive seen him playing a 12 string guitar and on
Urban Hymns ... even with all the orchestration you can hear an accoustic guitar in there prob Dick on his 12 string .

But you cant fault the guy, hes put Wigan on the map.... hes got a great vocal style and he is one awesome songwriter ... up there with Lennon I would say ...

In tv interviews though he gives the impression he s a chain smoker... hope he can knock that habit on the head ... before its too late !

It's because Bittersweet Symphony ripped off The Last Time by the Rolling Stones. The specific thing The Verve used was this orchestral instrumental of The Last Time - https://youtu.be/MKC5cdGBY04

I always thought that Richard Ashcroft's solo albums showed how important the other members of The Verve were - not just because of the chemistry but that they were all excellent musicians. 'Alone with Everybody' was an enjoyable album but it also felt a bit cheesy middle of the road without The Verve's input.

Personally, Nick McCabe's meandering guitar was the incredible fairy dust on top of Ashcroft's 'Urban Hymns' songs.

Some of those gigs with the Verve must have been brilliant
and people travelled from miles to get there too.

Richards killer songs... his voice and guitar........ with a hot band
backing him up.... they could have ruled the world...

but tensions and egos came in and broke up the band
and Richard is now... like Bowie... virtually a solo
singer songwriter performer.

Didn't Richard have a period where he was quite nervous on stage? I remember this vid from way back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJJP8mqCxOs

Actually Mick and Keef don't get a lot from it. As it is a pre 1971 Stones Track, The Stones themselves were ripped off by Alan Klein. His ACKABO label own all the pre 1971 stuff.

Also he did give The Verve permission to use the sample for Bittersweet Symphony. However he then decided after it became a hit that The Verve used to much of it. So sued for the entire royalties.

Alan Klein was a massive crook he basically stole all of The Stones early work. To be honest had a lot to do with the break up of The Beatles as well.

What a massive misfortune for Ashcroft and a complete act of greed by Jagger Richards.

It wasn't even the original stones record that it was sampled from!

What royalties were settled on in the end? 1/3rd for Ashcroft?

Stones have had a huge career. Why they had to destroy someone's biggest song is very nasty.

Imagine if a crooner from the 1950s sued the stones because 'the last time' stole a particular riff of theirs? It just didn't happen. Led Zeppelin were the worst for this. Hardly any of their riffs were original.

As I said in my post Mick and Keef did not sue Ashcroft. It was Alan Klein, If a pre 1970 Stones track is used his company gets the Royalties for it. Mick and Keef get a writers cut for these tracks but the majority goes to ABKCO records.

Interesting - bit like sting getting writing credits for money for nothing just because stings legal team saw some sort of similarity to don't stand so close to me, completely against stings will

Both great albums, but agree re: A Northern Soul. 'History' is my favourite track by them.

Yes but Sting sings on that Track. He put the "I Want My MTV" bit in and it's him singing it.

I understand that but he never had writing credits for the song until stings legal team got involved with the riff similarity. Initially only Mark Knopfler had writing credits. Sting only contributed vocally.
