Szechuan Pepper
Babycakes15

I want to try a chicken recipe that contains szechuan peppers, but there are none available by me. I've looked in markets and supermarkets and they have none. I live in quite a rural area which doesn't help. Is there anything out there that I can use as a substitute?

Seemingly not - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Szechuan_Pepper - the plant is not related to either normal pepper or chili. You'd have to mail order it, I think.

For a while it wasn't available around here but now the local supermarkts stock the Schwarts jars of it.

You can't really but you could improvise.

How about a couple of cloves and a star anise or five spice powder and some chilli flakes?

Yep, just looked on mySupermarket and Tesco sell the Schwartz jars for £2.02 which I suppose you could have delivered. Not sure how much that'd cost though..

Maybe if I do an online shop with Tesco they can deliver it, my local Tesco is tiny! Thanks for the improvisation suggestion Degsy

Add some finely grated lemon rind to ground blackpepper - if you have some pink peppercorns add a few of these too.

You could also mix some sumac with ground black pepper as a last resort because Szechuan is unique.

I picked some up in a supermarket recently but I can't which one. Probably either Tesco or Morrison.

Bit OT but after years of using only freshly ground black peppercorns I've recently reverted to using ground white pepper regularly which seems much stronger than I remember. What is your preference?

I use szechuan peppers a lot they have a peppery citrus flavour not easily replicated, I buy them from e-bay they're relatively cheep and usually don't have to wait to long for delivery.

there is a chinese-ish pepper and I think it is the Szechuan peppercorn and it NUMBS the mouth, so be aware of that. It's used in chinese cooking. It reminds me of the sort of numbing when you touched your tongue to a battery . Kind of unnerving.

Yes, it does numb your tongue but in a nice way. I've been cooking a lot of Chinese food lately and I'm becoming addicted to dan dan noodles, sprinkled with roasted, ground Szechuan peppercorns.

I've remembered wher I bought mine. it wasn't a supermaket, it was a greengrocers. All of the greengrocers in market towns round here stock this brand and usually much cheaper than the supermarkets.:
