I mean really, one scarcely believes that in 2013, we are still grappling with tin openers. It's adjacent to barbarity.

It's high time the government legislated to ban the production of conventional tins and made ring pulls mandatory across the board.

I hate the ring pulls on tins..Sometimes they even break . other times i have to get a knife or summat to prise it up to pull lol

Ring pulls can be just as dangerous as tin openers - imagine giving one a really good yank (giggity) and the lid then slicing your thumb open as it comes off...there's probably no really truly safe way to open a tin without risk - after all, there'll be sharp metal edges either way.

I hope not; I wouldn't get to use my mega-awesome Kuhn Rikon tin opener. It's an amazing bit of kit. Easy to use and leaves no sharp edges.

Not only that but as someone has already said, those ring-pulls can be a bloody pain in the butt sometimes. Either when you can't get a hold of the ring itself and have to use a knife to lift it up slightly or the razor-sharp edge of the lid. And as for trying to open my little tins of mackerel in tomato sauce? You know, with the ring-pull lids? NIGHT.....MARE!!! When you peel those buggers back you have to stop short of going all the way, because the resultant 'Ping' will splatter you with fishy juice otherwise!

Indeed, a nightmarish quandary, but one that I'm glad to say is easily overcomeable by allowing the juices to drain before peeling back the lid.

No, I struggle with some ring pulls.

I tend to use my tin opener even if they got the rings, well i did until I lost it. got another one today, a magican, £6, never paid that much for a tin opener before, but it looks good.

As for being resealable, you can buy lids that fit on the top, but you should never leave stuff in cans anyway once they are opened.

Your view is a tad extreme, if the ring pull works (and it does the vast majority of the time) fine, if not use an opener. Why ban conventional tins, at a guess they are cheaper to produce hence less environmental impact?

Ring pull work fine though and to be honest I'd not base a 'buy' on whether the can had a ring pull.

That said, I think this post could well be a wind up.

The worst are tin with keys.. Sometimes it goes wonky when halfway open and even if it opens okay you still often can't get the corned beef or Spam out.

Those are worse, which is why when I got my original tin opener i made sure it worked on them.

i know this new one does as well, because it opens the tins at the edge, not the top.

Considering the times we are in surely they should be banned? That extra bit of metal might not seem like much but across all the tin cans used in the world it must add up to a hefty waste of metal especially as the tops are even more likely to end up in the rubbish not the recycling

i think there is more to worry about in waste than a little bit of metal on a tin lid.

Those couple of grammes multiplied by the millions of tins used mount up.

Theirs no problem with ring pulls if you do the following..........lift the ring pull and bend back as far as you can,BEFORE you try to open the lid!! this breaks the seal, and will open easily.

Its only the Budget stuff that dosent have a ring pull, making it compulsory wall add a few P to each can.

Yeah, but I thought everyone was suppose to recycle these days, certainly in towns/cities where you get fined for putting a bit of paper in the wrong bin.

So in theory, it should not matter.

Saying that I prefer them to not bother at all and then we can use a tin opener. i know of someone who can't open these tins as they got limited use of their hands, so they need a electric tin opener, the problem is these ring pulls gets in the way and jam the tin opener.

So what may make it easier for me and you, makes it more difficult for some disabled people. His care worker have to pull the rings off his cans, making sure they don't open.

Yes, as long as you don't lose it iI think mine may have fallen into a rubbish bag, I can't find it anywhere. oh well,I needed a new one anyway, the old one was getting a bit grubby

Buy your friend with hand problems a ring pull opener, there are lots available for people with problems, you can get them for a couple of pounds on ebay. If they use an electric can opener he or she should have no problems using one of these openers, helps promote their independent living skills etc.

That's just an old wife's tale. Leaving stuff in cans for a reasonable length of time is perfectly harmless, you'll get no contamination from the can itself.

Yes, I certainly think that they should! They would also benefit the elderly immensely, especially if they have got arthritis!
