I recently saw a beautiful little chocolate dachhound and wondered if these are good pets. They seem to get a lot of negative press being aggressive Dogs. Any ideas experience Dsers..much appreciated

Don't let the cute fool you. Dachshund are hunting dogs originally. They have can be loving but also have a big attitude. And they are stubborn too. So they need lots of training and socialising.
Also there is a big health issue involving slipping discs. They are not the healthiest of breeds.

Hmm interesting, what I don't understand is how a breed of dog can all be the same like clones. I would have thought they would all be different. I have this dream of owning a sweet one who is cute and relatively easy to keep happy.

Well I expect an aggressive hunting dog was more use than a laid back "lets all live peacefully together" dog, so the aggressive ones where the ones who got to breed.
Breeds for hunting & fighting would tend to be aggressive, breeds for herding, retrieving and just living with the family would be more peaceful.

My friend always has dachshunds, and they are lovely dogs, but you have to be careful not to let them jump up on couch and especially not down. They get back problems a lot due to their long back.

TBH, most modern pedigrees are a world away from what they were originally bred to do.
Dachsunds can, and do, make lovely pets, if you are aware of they're needs, it's easy to think of small breeds as 'low maintenance' when in reality they need just as much time and training as a large breed, sometimes more

Thanks, not so much low maintenance just a happy dog rather than a grumpy hard to please one.

I adore them but I personally wouldn't have one because of the health issues. Apart from the cost and discomfort to the dog I just hate that serious health problems have been bred into them.

I wouldn't have a pedigree or "purebred" dog for similar reasons. It's not an industry I want to support and the poor dogs really suffer for human vanity and selfishness.

I've come across quite a few.....they are lovely dogs,sweet and very playfull, loyal, very protective of there owners, my next door neighbour has had several, don't really know much about the health issues, all I know is they do get a long and happy life , the ones I know of anyway!!

I have met really grumpy ones and also loving gentle ones, the key seems to be loads and loads of socialisation when young, that period when they are curious about the world and trust you needs to be exploited to the full. Luckily as pups they are small enought o carry so take them as many places as you can to see the world/other dogs and people are all nothing to fear or fight and you should have a lovely pet.

I got a cross Jack Russell, his nickname is sausage as hes the body type of a sausage dog but with Jack Russell markings, Hes got a weird personality! We've owned Jacks before and hes nothing like a Jack Russell at all, Hes got a personality of a man stuck in a dogs body, the facial expressions hes gives off are a bit strange! He looks very shifty most of the time but we've got used to that now lol

He can be very jealous when it comes to other dogs and will make himself be heard when he feels left out he also has a nervous streak about him which apparently is quite common in Dachshunds, being brought up with our other nightmare Jack Russell, she could be the cause of that problem!

Our dachshund was the gentlest loveliest little thing.
I don't recognise the 'aggressive' thing at all. They're not terriers either as far as I know.

My preference would be the long-haired variety as they are cuter than the short-haired ones.
