Are O2 data speeds poor or is it just me?

I left Vodafone as speeds were shocking, I was getting 1mb 3G, But this is what I get on O2 with an H displayed. Are O2 speeds poor or is it just my area?

They're pretty terrible. I used to get about 6-7MBit on my iPhone 3G back when it was first released, but it soon dropped to about 1MBit even in strong signal areas. Can't say I see much better on Voda, I think Three actually gave better results than both. No surprise really. We wouldn't want 4G/LTE if the carriers actually gave us a 3G signal worth a damn.

02 is typically 4-7Mbps where I live but it varies across the country.

I have seen posts of genuine 25Mbps on 3 in some places but the best I have achieved with an HSPA+ dongle that is rated to provide 21Mbps is around 3.5Mbps on the 3 network.

Try another cell site and see how that performs.

One of the better 3G speeds I have seen is 11Mbit on O2 on the outskirts of a village (yes, rural coverage on O2, that's a surprise in itself - it's normally GPRS).

I get 5-7Mbits regularly on T-Mobile but my phone isn't capable of the 21Mbit or higher HSPA revisions.

Yep, if you are the Full Monty on T-Mobile you won't ever get more than 4Mbps but who cares as that gets you full HD on YouTube or the BBC iPlayer.

There are a lot of folks on here who kid the life out of others about mobile broadband speeds.

What you get relating to what you use it for is important. 4Mbps on a handset for video streaming is perfect. 25-80Mbps is irrelevant if you get buffer free streaming with 4Mbps!

I got a text inviting me to join EE and get much faster speed.... but I thought .... what for? I get all I need from what they provide now without the savage limits and extortionate data pricing.

My phone at home is reporting 57Mbps but then it is also reporting 300Mbps from my wi-fi so I am taking that with a pinch of salt (as reported by the Battery Stats app on a WM8 phone).

I get about the same or less with a full H signal as well. Also even with a full H signal it would take an age to load a web page or refresh FB etc. It was absolutely pitiful so i moved to 3 and had much faster speeds and pages load much faster.

Try using a testing app like the following:

Ta for that:-

Wi-fi: 4.84 / 1.11 Mbps down/up
3G/H: 2.56 / 0.69

Sounds more likely.

It's the network. You shouldn't have to put up with it. Switch to EE/Three and you'll actually be able to load a webpage.

I and others constantly get over 15mbps 24/7
