Traditional cookbook suggestions for somebody stuck in a rut

I was wondering if anybody could recommend a really good old fashioned type cook book? The type your grandmother used to have that covers everything you could imagine food wise.

I'm getting bored cooking the same old stuff every week for supper and want to mix it all up a bit, especilly for my son (and my husband as I don't want him to get bored!).

I'd quite like a traditional one as it should have all the old favourites that come in handy in the colder months (broths and stews) as well as all year round healthy staples plus lots of amazing pudding and cake recipes that I can get my son to help me bake.

I've looked on amazon but I can't see anything that covers both supper and pudding.

Thanks in advance

My first thought would be Delia. Or grab a copy of Jamie Oliver's Ministry of Food perhaps?

Mary Berry's Complete Cookbook is excellent. I find it invaluable.

Forgotten skills of cooking (the time honoured ways are the best - over 700 recipes show you why) by Darina Allen.

Proper old style cooking and lots of information on cuts of meat, growing your own etc. Basically a recipe book covering everything to eat and drink. Has sections on cakes, biscuits, puddings, bread making.

I LOVE reading this book and have tried some of the recipes, even made my own butter using this book

Delia's Complete Cookery Course is the ultimate cookbook for me. It's full of exactly the kinds of recipes you describe. Lots of puddings and cakes, too.

Thank you, they all sound perfect.

I will have a look at all and see which one(s) to get now and will put the others on my amazon wish list.

Thanks again

+1

I like Delia's stuff. Good recipes that aren't too fiddly and work properly. That book will serve any home cook really well.

If you fancy something Italian, The Silver Spoon is a nice one to try out. It has been around in one form or another since 1950.

A friend of mine has a copy of Mrs Beeton How To Cook. It's a book with some updated recipes and it seems pretty good whenever I've flicked through it.

I agree with posters above as I still refer to my Delia Smith Cookery Course books, which I got in 1981. I regard Delia's methods as the definitive way of achieving good results with basic dishes which can then be adapted to suit whatever you're making.

I can also recommend the Good Housekeeping Cookery Book, which has lots of puddings and family supper dishes as well as soups, stews and quick dishes such as stir-fries. Again, I have had a copy of this since the 1980s and have since bought an updated version.

The full price is £18.99 but Amazon has new copies from other sellers from £9.99
