A question about visual perception and TV resolution.

I'm trying to have a discussion about 1080p/i, 4K, Ultra HD, 3D etc with a friend, and I'm a bit stuck and am wondering if anyone can help me.
How far in terms of resolution and our visual perception can we go with TV resolution?
I sort of understand dpi and human eye resolution with images
