I was at a Nokia care centre and they say the new update will be in 4 weeks. They could not tell me what they are but will have some WP8 features.

I hope it has the ability to alter text size.

My friend has the Lumia 800 and the only thing that 'annoyed' him was the lack of being able to increase it.

I'd expect it would me mainly bug fixes rather than anything useful.

If your friend does need larger text as far as I am aware all Windows Phone 8 phones can have there text sizes increased.

That's right WP8 can, but he's stuck in a 2 year agreement with Orange :-/

They should just quietly release WP8 for older devices with Mango and be done with it. Apart from multicore processor and some special hardware there's not much of a difference. OS should work with any number of processors you throw at it, 1 being a number, too and hardware should be optional. Drivers may need rewriting, but as I know MS they did not reinvent them completely.

If he is keen he can always sell the Lumia 800 for around £100 and pick up a new Windows 8 Phone for around £150

But will it be powerful enough? I don't think so. My HTC 8X takes ages to boot up as it is.

Depends on how much parallelism is there. Could be it has to run sequentially most of the time anyway till it's up.
