Ok I am stuck in a muddle now.
Got a galaxy ace which I originally hated, as comapred to old nokias it misses key phone features such as missed call/sms led notification. Originally had horrific battery life lack of profiles etc.
Now after rooting the phone, customising it etc, I have these missing functions back via apps and custom rom , a new 3rd party battery and custom kernel I now have better battery life even better than my old nokia, on standby now I average 10 days vs 2-3 days when phone new.
However the ace is defenitly showing its age and is really as min spec as it gets for android, the low ram can make it sluggish.
The s3 mini seemed an ideal upgrade for me, not top of the range, but also means smaller handset easier to fit in hand, in theory better battery life with weaker cpu, not too high resolution easier to read text. vs the s3 and of course much cheaper, or is it?
I read reviews stating whilst the s3 mini wasnt bad it was considered overpriced for what it is.
So basically here is where it gets interesting.
When I got my ace I got it on payg and swapped the sim's so keeping my o2 simplicity (which is a old great deal can no longer get).
To do the same on the s3 mini phone would be £200-220. S3 same price as s4 both £400 each. So even tho s3 is no longer the latest on payg pricing its had no discount at all. I dont know if the s3 mini has same treatment no discount, as is no s4 mini.
However if I look at o2's tariffs, the closest to my existing is there unlimited calls/text tariff at £27 month with the s3 mini thrown in. I currently pay £17 so its basically £10 month for 2 years for the s3 mini, works out only £20 more for the phone over payg price so probably superior as payments spread out. However on contract the s3 price falls sharply, its the same £27 month but with just a one of £50 payment at start. So £240 for the s3 mini or £290 for the s3. Suddenly the s3 mini seems bad value.
I would maybe be happy with the s3 mini at £22 month same tariff and £50 one off I dont know if I haggled over phone if O2 would give me that but seems now if I am to upgrade the s3 is the choice.
But the choice is more expensive than I posted because if I drop the tariff to no phone so back to simplicity at 24 months its £21 month vs the £17 I got now which I lose forever if I change it.
any thoughts?
