Any vintage champagne is better than non-vintage, as it is smoother but still as bubbly. You might have to spend about £30 for something impressive-looking. Even a 2006 vintage is better than something new.

Morrisons or Tesco usually have at least one vintage on sale.

The Champagne Company http://www.thechampagnecompany.com has some real special stuff at price + £5.25 delivery, if you really want to impress a friend, with a 2004 Vintage Moet at £40.00.

Moet? Not sure how much it is. Not a massive wine/champagne drinker but that's usually the one I see out and about

Get wine, champagne is massively overpriced. For £20 you will be getting a cheap bottle of champagne or an expensive and probably very good bottle of wine.

Veuve Clicquot!

Is that for bitchy gay men who stick together and don't bother with anyone new?

Tattinger, far superior to veuve and Moët.

Edit: oops, just noticed you said £20, in which case tattinger is out. How about a nice cava or prosecco instead? Or sometimes m&s have their champers at half price and that's pretty nice.

It's all a question of your taste buds really. My preference is for Perrier Jouet, but that's a bit more than the OP wants to pay.

Sainsbury's own prosecco is really good IMO.

Aldis is pretty good too - and a bargain at £7!! OP, you could buy them two bottles and look very generous!

Most decent champagne is going to be more than £20 so your mention of Perrier Jouet specifically is a bit odd.

For a gift it seems more impressive if you spend more. For himself, if he was into wine, he might get something cheaper. Champagne means it is expensive.

I mentioned it because I like it. No other reason. Call it a recommendation in case someone digs this thread up in a couple of years time looking for a champagne suggestion.

But champagne is completely overpriced, as I said, for £20 you can get a stunning bottle of wine or an average bottle of champagne. Your choice.

I'd go this route too. I'd rather have a decent bottle of wine / cava / prosecco than a mediocre (at best) bottle of champagne.

Prosecco is the new and better champagne! Champagne comes nowhere near much cheaper Italian fizz these days, and for under a tenner a bottle it's a no brainer. I don't know anyone who buys overpriced champagne these days.
