VC and Tattinger are both winners for a medium budget, and black label Lanson - all are occasionally put on special offer in sainsburys/tesco. Can also highly recommend the sainsburys taste the difference prosecco- its very good and is really rather cheap.

BiB - entirely untrue.

I echo the votes for prosecco - we served it at our wedding instead of champagne, it came in at half the price and as previous posters have said, a £10 bottle of Prosecco is far superior to a £20 bottle of champers... Waitrose normally stock good ones but if you can pop in to an independent off licence, they'll be able to recommend one for you.

It's both true and untrue - the question is subjective, really. Everyone has different tastes, and Champagne is one of those products where the pricier it is, the more people tend to want it. It's to do with what are known as "Veblen goods".

Or cava for the same reasons. A vintage cava knocks spots off a cheap champagne, yet it's similarly priced.

It's not, it's simply untrue that any vintage Champagne is better than any non-vintage Champagne. Put your Krug NV up against vintage Moet and see who knocks spots off the other.

Not really, it's entirely subjective. I might find that the Krug NV is nicer than the vintage Moet, you may disagree, but that doesn't change the fact that taste is entirely subjective.

I give up. I was disagreeing with the statement that all vintage Champagne is better than NV. That all vintage Champagne is smoother than NV. Subjectivity has bugger all to do with it, that's just false.

Apologies, I think I misunderstood you. I agree that the blanket statement is false.

Seeing you haven't had any recommendations for wine yet, here's two very nice reds for around £20, although you'll have to add delivery charges. Be quick if you want this Gold Award Syrah as it will soon be unavailable.

Aldi seems to be doing okay with their wine and spirits.

I've enjoyed their gin and a few of their award winning wines but I haven't tried their award winning champagne yet. It;s my birthday soon so I might rectify that.
