Well I never
Well, I never expected to be surprised quite the way I have been today. And not from the bloke with the smouldering eyes. That yearning has gone away! No, this was an unexpected thing came totally out of the blue! No lingering looks, no sudden zing No making me want to say "Phew". Well, I never thought this would happen to me I've been totally caught off guard. In a second a friend has turned out to be The one I've fallen for hard!. And strangely enough, he feels that way too And he is as taken aback As I am, I even made HIM say "Phew" when I mentioned hitting the sack! Well, I never imagined how happy I'd be But Fate has her own special plans. We've talked about it, him and me And of Fate, we are now both huge fans! And after all we've both been through, It's been no easy ride of late, I'm starting afresh with someone new Thank YOU so VERY much Fate! ![]() ![]()

The Dawn of Man
Who burst the monkey-bubble? Who thought, so that we can? Who took the time and trouble Back at the dawn of Man? A billion stars above them, Like gems in one dark pan, Did watchers fear or love them Back at the Dawn of Man? At works of wonder gazing, With lakes and hills to scan, It must have seemed amazing Back at the Dawn of Man. One broke the chains that fetter, One reached the fruit and ran And found two legs were better Back at the Dawn of Man. And as the sun was sinking Some hominids began Intelligently thinking Back at the Dawn of Man. The origin of Reason, The start of our long plan, The first self-conscious season Back at the Dawn of Man. © |

That's me done until Thursday - keep writing poets, keep lurking lurkers
A poem a day Keeps stagnation at bay

Spartacus
I Each empire unforgiving, Each cruelty, fort and dome, When Spartacus was living That Empire's name was Rome. II The gladiators clanged their swords For baying, cheering roman hordes In hot arenas 'neath the sun. Theatrical, with muscles strained Those captive fighters entertained Spectators who saw death as fun. And yet among the bloody grind There was a man, the special kind, A hero of the vanished past. From Spartacus came bravery So great it challenged slavery, The gladiators rose at last! Crude weapons were employed to make A bold escape, a daring break, No ranks were ever seen like these. He led them well, an army grew, The shepherds joined, the herdsmen too, Defeating Roman troops with ease. Yet nothing strong as Rome could let This Spartacus become a threat, To crush the slaves' revolt they must. No strike or violence was withheld, A battle raged and someone felled Poor Spartacus, from dust to dust. Now those who had survived the war Were punished by the Roman law, A brutal end so far from home. Six thousand of his rebels died, Six thousand men were crucified And withered on the road to Rome. III In agony they died hard, What sorrow God engraves, O Spartacus you tried hard But could not free the slaves. © |

I felt the poem Spartacus needed major surgery. It's in the historical section of Farewells and Love Songs and the piece was just too brief. An uprising against Roman forces must have taken balls of steel - Jesus showed the same courage in my opinion. I kept the original start and ending, but I nicked the middle bit's format from The Harlot's House by Oscar Wilde.
Sorry Oscar

True love is very hard to find (in my limited experience). If this is a true story, I hope it goes well Ruth! Nice poem too, it captures the excitement of the early stages
![]() This is largely poetic licence ...... very very loosely based on something someone said

I WISH
I wish I could write similar stuff to that which I read on this thread. My scribbles, I guess, are fair enough made of thoughts running through my head. Then I read the powerful ones, Those which fascinate me' Food for thought, there in tonnes And such vivid pictures I see. Some are long, others short It matters not how many lines. It's the tale in which I am caught and which harnesses my mind. For a little while, I am stuck tight In the author's world I am snared. I'm glad that you all choose poems to write, and once written, are then shared. |

Life a Spinning Penny
Dry your eyes lost gentle soul Those tears can blind your view Of how this life can spin a change Like heads or tails when threw Don’t place your bet on what will show For each can be your way Both faces of the penny tossed Hold paths to your heyday . No face is set in granite stone You can change it with a smile A mirror cracked becomes but two To reflect each route a while. Rare is the one who travels light That coin can heavy weigh But pick it up with all your strength And toss past tales away. |

Gods of Rock and Roll
Rock and rollers wiping out the final Crooners with the speeding up of vinyl; Bliss at 45 per minute it's a Single blasting out of a Wurlitzer. Anti-heroes louder than a cannon, Johnny Kidd, Gene Vincent and Del Shannon, Love is there for winning or for losing, All along Route 66 go cruising. Juveniles in touchy blackboard jungles Bored by older people's flaws and bungles, Elvis on a million bedroom posters, Little Richard, Dion and the Coasters. Buddy claiming Peggy Sue got married, Memphis, Tennessee and names that carried Poetry for kids who turn the tables, Hypnotized by spinning record labels. Sometimes in this world you have to shock it, Teenagers with money in the pocket Dancing madly to Great Balls of Fire, Letting gods of rock and roll inspire. © |
