Cheer up, it might never happen
in the morning, smell of napalm
Jacks boots lay forgotten on the ground
silence can be heard all around

And God did make the little green men
some have to die now and then
Please save my Jack the lad
I so much enjoy being his dad

Cheer up, it might never happen kid
Although I think it probably just did
The Christmas speech was all Jack Straw
I couldn't watch, the pain too raw
Ben and Jerry keep comfort cold
and Michelle's hand I get to hold

I take comfort from Tony Benn
son of my pals Terry and Jen
so glad that he made it home
now I never feel alone

and so my Jack went off the cliff
i'm off to roll another spliff

Newgrange

North of Dublin today
Is a barrow, they say
Which surpasses all other ones built,
Where the gods rise and join
At the Bend in the Boyne
And the fields make an emerald quilt.

In the stones on the green
Many carvings are seen,
Spiral mazes and diamonds ornate
And the entrance there shows
Where a passage grave goes,
Longing for a particular date.

For the ancestors knew
Winter Solstice was due
And they built it to watch the dawn send
Beams of glory that shine
Down the passage's line
To the chamber designed at the end.

And the dark becomes light
And the chamber gets bright
As the glorious sunshine is spilt,
Where the gods rise and join
At the Bend in the Boyne
And the fields make an emerald quilt.

This sounded like a poem written from pain. I sense it's about someone who fell on foreign fields. I didn't understand all the connections but I still found it a moving poem MrKeen

No One In

'Twas very quiet on DS
When I popped in today,
No verses sent, a fact that meant
The poets were away.

On Saturday I'll be back,
While this thread makes me higher,
Tonight I think I'll have a drink
And sit beside the fire.

LONG TIME NO SEE

"There's something I've missed"
was the thought in my head.
It bothered me so much
I tossed and turned in bed.
"Now WHAT was the thing
that I meant to do?"
But try as I might
it just wouldn't come through.
I searched my diary
and I wracked my brain
almost to the point
where it caused me pain!
I resigned myself
to the fact it was gone.
I just let it go
and moved quietly on.

Then all of a sudden
out of the blue
Like a bolt from sky
it came flying through!
The poetry thread!
Well bugger me!
Haven't been there for ages!
Long Time No See!

This Be The Pub

While poetry is my field,
I'm also fond of ale;
The Royal Oak in Ifield
Is central to this tale.

It may not lure a baron
Or those who wear a crown,
Yet served by Matt and Sharon
You won't leave with a frown.

I can't explain quite how but
The best nights here are found,
The pub dog's name is Albert
Who plays or sniffs around.

He doesn't need a muzzle,
A gentle mutt he is
And if you like a puzzle,
On Sundays there's a quiz.

Teams sit and make suggestions,
Conferring while they sup,
Old Dennis asks the questions
But tends to cock them up.

No live band plays a bummer,
As well as guitar licks
Just outside in the summer
The Morris Men bash sticks.

I roam miles, an outsider
Yet I'm a loyal bloke;
For company and cider
I choose the Royal Oak.

Apologies for repeating an old poem Wouldn't it be great if we could all meet up in the Royal Oak? A poet gathering Saturday nights are best, when the bands play

Ruth and Jimmy, you're both welcome Last Saturday they had Devil's Brew on, a rockabilly band with a double bass! I staggered home really happy after that

Northern Debbie

Some things you can't forget 'em,
Here's one I haven't yet;
The wedding do in Streatham
Where me and Debbie met.

She was a guest like I was,
With Debbie one thing's sure:
I fell in love, the high was
Like none I'd had before.

I saw her and was smitten,
Her dress was short and peach,
An English rose, a kitten,
Yet she was out of reach.

For she was with a fellow,
A charmer known as Rod,
His tie was grey and yellow,
I thought 'You lucky sod.'

The party grew much louder,
I lost her in the throng,
The bride's old man looked prouder,
The groom's mum sang a song.

With noise and good cheer growing
Somebody spiked a drink,
Who picked it up not knowing?
Come on, who do you think?

I staggered, I tried dancing,
The pint from hell was free,
I stumbled while advancing
When Debbie spoke to me.

She knew that I was slaughtered,
She knew the brew I'd copped
And yet she never faltered;
She held my hand and bopped.

They must have put some Smirnoff
And rum and scotch in there,
A drunkard is a turn-off
But Debbie didn't care.

Her necklace held a black jewel,
She told me it was jade,
She said she came from Blackpool
And liked T. Rex and Slade.

She said she'd been a model
And owned some tasteful snaps,
She said (though I spoke twaddle)
I wasn't like most chaps.

A hit by Fleetwood Mac sent
Us wild, to her surprise
I liked her northern accent,
I loved her hazel eyes.

The next song was much slower,
Besotted and well wrecked,
My wandering hands moved lower
And then at last we necked.

I don't know if Rod saw us,
Where was he in the hall?
No angry bloke came for us
While we both had a ball.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

There'll never be another,
We only met once more,
By then she was a mother
And nearly thirty-four.

Though not much rhymes with Debbie,
If I reach a low ebb
I think about the great night
I danced with northern Deb.

Lakeside

Here life's calm,
A perfect balm
Of gently lapping waves,
Swans confide
And herons glide,
The gorgeous mallard bathes.

Peaceful lake
I almost ache,
One thought of you and I'm
Lost in a dream
Where ripples gleam
Reflecting the sublime.

With no care
I sit and stare
At willows on the shore,
Reservoir
Divine you are,
A place to reassure.

When the sun
Is almost done
And veils of dusk unfold,
Then the swans
Turn into bronze
And Lakeside turns to gold.

Memories

You can sail or struggle through life it seems
meeting people along the way.
In my case it been thousands
through passed years till today.
My memory isn't the greatest,
I've a lot of stuff on my mind.
So many people I don't recall,
that may sound a tad unkind.
I don't think I'm a fickle gal,
My heart is not stone cold
But you have to be quite special
If I'm to remember you of old.
And here I am and there you are
and now I clearly see
Despite the passage of time
You also didn't forget me.
So hello again my dear friend
I know you've been busy too.
I'm happy you sort of remember me
As I've never forgotten you.

Strangely

Strangely I'm cheered up today,
A message made me smile.
I read it and was taken back
to my past life for a while.

And though that is not a place
I'd usually choose to go.
The memory was a good one
of someone I used to know.

So I stayed there and basked in it,
and mulled it over for a while.
I remembered all the chats we had
and with it came the smile.

Strangely I never EVER thought,
that in going back to that difficult place,
I'd find some lovely memories
But strangely, there's a BIG smile on my face.

Some sort of crate?
It’s walls feel like they’re crushing me,
Their lining soft and silkily,
And a lid held by weight?

Can move my arms.
But shoulders held in place so tight,
I push and shove with all my might,
Now really alarmed!

Kick with my feet.
But cannot budge the walls or lid,
Though wooden sounds they do forbid,
It feels like concrete.

Hello!
Can anybody hear my calls?
I’m trapped here in these silky walls….

….Hello!
