'And now, the Shipping Forecast'
From DJs who announced the hit parade I turned my dial along the wavelength hiss To hear an accent clipped, polite and staid Give messages no captain could dismiss; Gale warnings send hypnotic English bliss. What names belonged to every wild outpost, The Bay of Biscay, Fisher, Malin Head, All faraway and scattered round the coast Where maelstroms wake the spirits of the dead, To Dogger and to Lundy I was led. O Cromarty, a fog will gather soon, I watch it rolling with a ghostly glare, A solid shawl of white beneath the moon And talking to the sailors in its snare, The Shipping Forecast, magic voiced on air. © |

The Soldier's Child
As darkness falls o’er fields, And crackling campfires light The ragged children move among the dead In hungry hope the bloodied bodies yield Those treasures of the night Their tiny, unwashed hands to feel Crouch and pat the bulging hems Of coats and shako hats, that shed Life’s few belongings, there to steal Coins and silver, sometimes even gems And if the dead should stir In protest at the hunters’ searching touch A knife will casually slit their throat instead And who, by God should make this perfect child a cur? But mothers who would quickly do as much. |

One more night.
We parted months ago, After an enduring love affair. Did you realise I hated it so, leaving you alone there? There was no choice though. Suddenly the call came Wasn't the option to say No. You were never the same. When I left you alone You pined for me I wasn't able to phone I had to let you be. One night the pain became too much for me. It was more than I could bear. I sought permission to visit you. And suddenly I was there. I slipped into your sleepy arms surprised you with a kiss Told you how I loved you and how much I would miss you after this one night. This was all we had to say goodbye properly and be a little bad. You made love to me as you never had before. Urgently, with a hunger, all night until the dawn. I felt, that night, the love you would always have for me. I didn't want to go again But what must be must be. And now you are alone again Unaware I watch over you I feel your never ending pain There's nothing I can do. I never would have left you But it's the Gods who decide Those who stay and live on and those of us who dies. |

Oh, star bright
‘Let me put the Star on the top of the Christmas tree. I'll carefully climb up the ladder, then you can pass it up to me. I promise to take my time and keep steady and very calm, I’ll just lean out over the branches and slowly stretch out my arm to gently put the Star on that top sticky-up bit of tree that almost touches the ceiling. I can do it. Please, please, let me.' ‘If you promise to be very careful and take your time when you do, you can put the Star on the Christmas tree. Yes, I will let you. And when you’ve fixed the Star, stop and slowly look down and see how the tree spreads its magic to everything around. Then we can all remember how 2000 years ago, another Star shone its light on a cold, dark land below.’ I reached out, then ever-so-carefully placed the Star on top of the tree, its branches gave a little shudder as shards of light trembled in front of me. Then I eased back and looked in wonder as I saw whispers of light all around, falling from the Star, shimmering over the branches and drifting to the ground. I’d completed a connection between my home and a very distant place. Briefly joining together 2000 years of hope and time and space. |

A Dry Christmas
Having been invited to spend Christmas Day
partaking of a festive feast I eagerly sat down at the laden table eyeing the turkey. What a beast! It's aroma brought back distant memories of previous yuletide do's. Our host appeared bearing bottles, Oh goody, here comes the booze. A glass was poured, I took a sip. There was something 'off' I fear. Until our host went on the explain 'We're all tee total here". "Oh well", thought I, "never mind" I watched the carving skills of our host. The succulent turkey, now presented to me, turned out to be as moist as burnt toast! After choking some of it down, I tried very hard to disguise the fact that it was ghastly. I hoped it didn't show in my eyes. Washing it down with a drink from my glass I prayed that no-one would see how horrid I thought the 'vino' tasted, It's NOT wine when it's alcohol free. Mercifully, at last, the eating was over. We all sat and chatted together Looking out of the big bay window someone commented on the weather. A crisp bright day, no rain or snow, Sunshine streamed in, warm and clear. "Look at that" someone said, " A dry Christmas Day!" That's when it occurred to me ... NOT as dry as in here! |

LETTING GO. MOVING ON
At the time it never enters your head that it's possible to let go and move on. The days turn into weeks, both the hurt and the anger are never quite done. Carried around like a badge of honor, Clutched like a blanket of comfort. If you're not careful, and hang on too long You find you're selling yourself short. There's no moving on to anywhere until resentment has been let go. You find no room for good things when bad thoughts ebb and flow. "That's easier said than done" is what you're thinking I bet! Funnily enough though, I found it easier to forgive and forget. ''Don't waste your time with pain and regret'' A line from a song I heard every night. "You're frozen when your hearts not open" That dawned on me as being quite right. Now we're some months down the line. Life is very different these days Having let go and moved right along, without trying I've changed my ways. Smiling comes easy, laughing does too I think lots of jolly nice things. Those bad feelings have all disappeared as this new chapter begins. ![]() ![]()

The Christmas Spirit
With Santa drunk, intoxication Meant no gift reached its destination, He said to the reindeers 'Please let me explain dears, I'm pissed and we're all on vacation.'

A nice positive ode Ruth
![]() Thank you Musty ![]() I must confess I'm tending to fling poems on here in an effort to keep the wheels moving. Some of them seem hastily chucked together, because they are. I am the first to admit they are a bit .......... ropey ![]() ![]() ![]() We have to nudge our way to the first page somehow ![]() ![]()
