High Soar the Pterosaurs

A crested head, a mouth entirely toothless,
At feeding times a frenzy would occur,
The dive down to the sea below was ruthless,
A pounce at speed, a rapid splash and blur.

The victims thrashed about, becoming frantic
As jaws inflicted terrible blood-loss,
The wingspan of the beast was so gigantic
It matched a house at twenty foot across.

The cliff-tops made a fortress high and spacious
For banshee guards that always won the day,
The pterosaurs reigned here in the Cretaceous;
New eras form as others fade away.

Above the landlocked dinosaurs they hovered,
Surveying from the safety of the skies
And if a stray intruder got them bothered
The coast rang to their awful piercing cries.

Warm embryos pulsated, young ones breaking
Out of their fragile eggs with beak and claw,
More lethal killer squadrons in the making;
Colossus of the airways, pterosaur.
