Insect in the Amber

Insect in the amber
Gasped a final breath,
Unable to clamber
From Jurassic death.

On a tree you landed,
Antennae erect
But they left you stranded,
Failing to detect

Resin that would stick you,
Like a hostage caged
Struggling in the thick glue,
Little one you raged.

Tiniest of creatures,
After all the strife
Amber maintained features
As they were in life.

Though time clipped and shuttered
Such delightful wings,
The last day they fluttered
Dinosaurs were kings.

Still and incognito,
Now you outshine them,
Beautiful mosquito
In a yellow gem.

More to it than sex?
Survival defects?
I think love might just be that

As for needing a new car, get yourself to Mad Mike Motors. You can pick up a tidy four wheeled drive for fifty quid !

So lets get back together
We love to share the midges
Haggis rules forever
We need to build some bridges.

Hi Musty Enjoyed your recent poems. Haven't been here a lot lately but see some regular commentators are missing. Hope all is well with them.

John I thought you'd left us

Great poem dude, I've missed your unique style
Thanks Musty. This place is like Hotel California. "You can check-out any time you like, but you can never leave!"

Really enjoyed your Insect in the Amber poem. Looking forward to the book.

Do you mean the theatre production held in the dark ? If so, you will have to let us know what the experience was like.

If you mean you are getting married, congratulations

What the...!!!

The Ring. The Green Hell. Nürburgring Nordschleife is coming to my favourite racing sim, although why I mentioned it in the poetry thread is a little puzzling. Must've been the Mad Mike reference.

How you two got to Der Ring des Nibelungen or [shudder] marriage, I just don't know.

"Church wedding"? Would be a cold day in hell.

Flying

If I had but the power
To fly upon the wing,
I'd choose to glide each hour
Away from everything.

Above a lonely ocean
I'd smoothly soar and rise
Or plummet in slow motion
Beneath a bridge of sighs.

How sweet to pass a spire
Unnoticed by the crowds,
Then travel even higher
And drift among the clouds.

If I had wings to show me
What birds alone can know,
With all the world below me
My joy would overflow.

I maybe need to work on this one a bit more but are there any thoughts on this? I've been quite dozy lately, so I kept blanking out a bit but I came up with this anyway... (I wrote one on a similar topic recently. I keep seeming to go over similar things but oh well!).

Whats True?

Barely a day goes by,
when I dont wonder why,
who,
what is true?.
As a person I rely, on the PC screen,
my gateway to communication,
as an observer I catch the briefest of glimpses -
people whose lives hide behind,
that which they share online,
what is real and what is not? typed words and chosen photos
are our glimpse, at anothers life - what connections can be made?
do we only see, what we want to see?
as an outlet, social media may offer freedom,
expression, that chance to reach out - self-reassurance
your not alone
and yet,
why?.
Evenings spent watching messages come and go,
brief greetings in passing,
life goes on,
but where is the connection?
why do I bow down, at the alter of technology?.
Do you realise the barriers your self-inflicting,
as time passes,
slowly the mind slumbers and procrastination rules,
surely inspiration will be found between the lines?
is it so?
ah but must we not keep our finger on the pulse,
to stay connected is to stay ahead of the game, yes?
these thought patterns trouble me.

Musty and Izzy, and everyone else - you guys have been busy writing great poetry! So much to catch on. It was a great day Friday knowing our wonderful country is still as one. The Scots are a proud nation and it shows that you can feel pride in your country aswell as being proud to be British. It's a shame some yes voters doesn't realise that!

Musty I was moved by your World War One poem as a tribute to the Scots and English fighting alongside each other - a symbol of unity. I have written a little book of poetry to commemorate the 100th Anniversary since the outbreak of World War One. I wrote the poems in it to be accessible to a modern reader. I thought I'd share one with you all.

GOOD MEN OFF TO WAR

"Are you going dad?" asked Lucy.
"In a bit love" dad replies.
With kitbag filled with all he requires,
Dad smiles but silently cries.

"Are you ready love?" asked Flora.
"Not quite, but soon" says Stan.
With all his worldly possesions at side
He is a terrified young man.

"Is it time yet?" asked Violet.
"A few minutes left" answers Dick.
With his memories of the ones he loves,
He is desperate and worried sick.

How long before the battle cries
Wake them in their sleep?
How long before they shiver with cold
In the trenches vast and deep?

How long before the sound of guns
Penetrates their brain?
How long before their dead friends'
Spirits drive them all insane?

These few good men that are off to war
Are just somebody's son.
Or dad or husband or brother dear
A loved one for someone.

Some of them will one day return
But most of them will die
And when back home the women hear,
They will learn to say goodbye.

They will hold them forever in their hearts
And think of them everyday
For the special men who fought so brave
Some poppies we will lay.

"I've died" dad tells Lucy,
"I'm in heaven love" says Stan.
"I'm coming home" Dick replies
The returning hero, man.

Taken from "Fields of Souls" and written in April 2014
to commemorate the 100th Anniversary since the start of WWI.

Isn't that what it's all about? And good on you for being proud of your roots, of where you come from and your status as a British citizen - a Scottish British citizen! I love being English but am proud to be British! I am a proud English British citizen. In my opinion the wonder of the UK is that in every single corner from John O'Groats down to Lands End there's something amazing to see and hear. The cultures, the accents, the landscapes, the traditions, the climate and so on. Four individual nations oozing in pride for their own region. Yet also being British - part of this fantastic United Kingdom.

Yes, I've always been a proud Brit. At school one time, we were asked if we identified ourselves more as Scottish, British or European and I thought first and foremost British, then Scottish and maybe European?. There are some really pretty parts of England and of course, also here in Scotland their already talking about whoever becomes the next First Minister of Scotland, likely starting to work towards another referendum(!). This is why im told its called the neverendum - there will always be passionate people wanting to push for it (ie. independence), until it finally happens, hence its the never-ending-referendum.

If the Labour Party become the Governing Party in Scotland in 2016, the threat of referendum's diminish. Of course even if the UK Government (I hate the term "Westminster") give the Scottish Parliament what it promised, the SNP will say it hasn't delivered. Nationalism is devisive and dangerous. The English Defence League believe they're standing up for the entire population of England - they most certainly are not! They attract those who may be swayed by anger, false promises and scaremongering.

It is highly unlikely that the UK Government will grant another referendum for the foreseeable future. The world at large would be unlikely to take Scotland seriously as a nation if it seems to be demanding referendums on independence each time a politician doesn't agree with the UK Govt. In honesty, Salmond I think knew he would create a divided Scotland. He knew he would get concessions which is what I believe he wanted anyway. But to create a divisive nation is a wicked thing to do. I have read on threads in the politics forum of how some Scots were in tears last Thursday, terrified that their country would never be the same again. What sort of man would put his citizens through that, all in the name of democracy? It made me feel very upset just reading those terrible accounts.

You mean 2015? I hope Labour do but we'll see and its impossible to please everyone, thats for sure. I don't often venture in to the politics forum, if at all - I hear enough politics as it is (lol), there's been wall to wall coverage of it for the last couple of months just about. Its been on the Scottish news for years, maybe since 2012 or so?. It has been very devisive though.

Apparently the 45% who voted 'yes' are now coming together under the 'yes' campaigns new name of 45% or the 45ers or whatever their called. Eh, good luck to them but personally I'd rather everyone united together and worked to try and ensure we get the deal we were promised by the government, regarding extra devolved powers for the Scottish Government. I'm with the Queen on this one, we should come together but there is a bit of a 'them vs us' attitude around. I was seriously worried about the outcome of the referendum last week - I didnt post in that forum but I was very much concerned that the 'yes' vote could have won, not knowing how things would pan out but realising daily life would most definitely change. I couldn't see how it would help us to put up barriers, possibly border controls, set up new currency arrangements yadda yadda...

Oh and if you think the English Defence League (or BNP/UKIP) are bad, what about Britain First? scary with that im off to bed(!).
