Roses are red.
Danger is too.
I'm off to bed
and there's room for two.

Doh! I should have guessed the Little Sugar Puff initials, nice one John Sitting on a cornflake, as another John once sang

The Dawn of Man

Who burst the monkey-bubble?
Who thought, so that we can?
Who took the time and trouble
Back at the Dawn of Man?

A billion stars above them
Like gems in one dark pan,
Did watchers fear or love them
Back at the dawn of Man?

They pondered hard while gazing,
With mountainsides to scan
It must have seemed amazing
Back at the Dawn of Man.

One broke the chains that fetter,
One reached the fruit and ran
And found two legs were better
Back at the Dawn of Man.

And as the sun was sinking
Some hominids began
Intelligently thinking,
Back at the Dawn of Man.

The origin of Reason,
The start of our long plan,
The first self-conscious season
Back at the Dawn of Man.

Bloodline

I’m drawn to the dark and the dead
talking through the bloodline of generations.
Congealed cells sticking,
clotted flow of ancestral whispers
passed down,
carrying on
the moments of doubt,
the spur of the moment,
stepped out in confrontation.
The driven need to move forward
and to take hold,
or let go
from the pain
and the punishment.

My mother hardly spoke of you,
yet your figure shouts out
from your sepia pictures.
Tall,
elegant,
strong-featured.

The doubt of your end a childhood myth.

Is my recollection clear?
Did I hear right?
What drove you to step out?
A moment’s lapse?
A lifetime’s struggle?

Has the answer died
or is it,
somewhere,
in my inheritance?

I'll try to post the poem Love on Saturday

Edith Grey

Edith Grey
Lived round our way,
A spinster born in Bath,
Edith prayed
And never strayed
Far from the chosen path.
Edith's search
Took place in church,
On weekdays more than most,
Twice a call
By bicycle
To meet the Holy Ghost.
Every year
At times held dear
To thank the Lord she went,
She wrote a hymn
For cherubim
And sang it once at Lent.
Edith Grey
Lived round our way,
By service she was called
And when at last
Old Edith passed
God's love was her reward.

Sex sells - hence 50 Shades of Grey, like the dire Full Monty, gets a ton of publicity.

I prefer humble characters like Edith Grey myself

Superb and so moving Scottie - I found this easy to follow and I could relate to it strongly. I wrote a poem about my grandfather recently, who was a cruel and violent man. He'd been through the Somme, which probably caused a lot of it. I never met him, all I've got are a couple of old sepia photographs. He does look a bit scary in them.

Sadly, Ponch (his nickname came from Pontius Pilate) is too long to post in my available time here.

My memory isn't what it was, but I don't remember seeing 'The Dawn of Man' before. Is it a new one? Quality stuff as always.

A chilling question at the end of 'Bloodline' Scottie. I'd say no. You know better.

Quarks and kindness.

The instant called just now
has taken its final bow.
It cannot be relived,
but can be forgived.

The moment soon to come
and then another one
can all be changed to suit
the dreamer in pursuit
of a better situation,
or higher elevation.

In future ecstasy
everyone will see
why we're called Mankind.

Just an ode called Love would make a great title for a poem.

Unbroken Smile.

My mind is on a planet
of limestone and granite.
Some say someone planned it,
but I can't understand it.

My body's getting older.
Winters seem much colder.
Summers are too hot
and there's something I forgot.

Sometimes my mind is somewhere ace.
There's a smile on every face
and on every perfect day
there's nothing more to say.

I like it, Archiver but there is always something more to say, no need to worry.

I'm not so sure you're right.
The eternal plight
can not last for ever.

Soon we must sever
our need to know
from our need to grow
and then time will come to pass
when this mortal looking glass
sees no reason to say more.

But not for long for sure.

Cheers John The Dawn of Man is an oldie I've revamped. The first part of the book is a chronology of history, from creation and the dinosaurs up to 9/11 and a glimpse of the future.

Archibald the Trumper

When Archibald was nine, impelled
To fart he bent and grinned,
Archibald the Trumper held
Obscene amounts of wind.

Archibald the Trumper, he
Was fond of yellow jumpers,
Archie's fart appearance fee
Was standard for all trumpers.

A bag of sweets was his reward,
The prize for ripping bouts,
Pre-show he got his mum to hoard
A ton of Brussels sprouts.

His face contorted, bending tough
He strained until one busted,
The trouble was, it smelt so rough
That kids ran off disgusted.

Archibald the Trumper topped
The rest, a wind guru
Till the loudest fart he dropped
Propelled him to Peru.

I've written a raft of new material but I don't get much time to post here. One day I'm going to pay for a two-hour session

The new stuff has strengthened the book I feel. Among them are:

The Loves of Dante Gabriel Rossetti
Northern Debbie
The Pink Dalek
Realm of Druids
Looking Back
She Walked Among the People (Tracy's Tale)
New Wave Breaking

Speak soon my friends
