How on earth is the current version of "Doctor Who" racist? I genuinely can't
think of any way it could be interpreted as offensive to ethnic minorities. Seems to me the
MoS is just s*** - stirring.

Mail Article

The article's about some (probably self published) book containing various essays on Race issues in DW.

Standard anti BBC Mail story, with zero substance.

Hurrah for the blackshirts!

Except for Hartnell, of course, who was racist, anti-semitic and probably read the Mail as well.

These academics who claim that Doctor Who is racist are as ridiculous as those who once claimed that "Baa Baa Black Sheep" was a racist song.

I believe he was also homophobic. I was very critical of Bill Hartnell's prejudices on this forum about two years ago, and I distinctly remember Tingramretro (Hartnell's biggest fan), a controversial former poster, with whom I generally got on well (I was one of the few who did!) absolutely losing his rag with me.

I can see why some of the older stories, like "Tomb of the Cybermen" and "Talons"
could be criticised for their negative depiction of ethnic minorities, but I can't
see any ethnic stereotyping in the post-2005 version.

As for the bit about "Red Indians having Savage
minds" in AUE, that was part of the Doctor's
technocratic arrogance at the start
of the story, that he moved away
from as the series continued.

Next week: how "Dowton Abbey" promotes Luxemburgist Marxism.

Well in fairness to Hartnell, there is little point judging him by 21st century standards of what is acceptable behaviour when he didn't live in the 21st century. Homosexual acts were illegal in 1963 when Who started and I'm sure many people his age at the time shared his views. I'm not really defending him though, it is what it is.

That story was a total fabrication from beginning to end. Never happened. Totally made up by The Daily Mail.

The Daily Mail for once aren't having a go at the BBC here; not when they've some PC academics to have a go at.

The academics points are mainly rubbish, though I'll concede that they do have a point about Talons. It was "of its time" in casting a white actor made up to play a Chinese man; it wouldn't be done that way now.

Of course seriously. There's a documentary on The Gunfighters dvd "The End of the Line" that goes into it in some detail. It's one of the best extras on the whole classic dvd range actually, I'd strongly recommend it.

Just read the DM article and the DM are sort of mocking the academics.

Not too much mocking of course!

-------------------
Dr Who, one of the few programmes on TV that makes an effort to understand prejudice, and with a large child audience as well.

This reminds me of academics who criticise US President Lincoln for not being perfect.

They always pick on those who are actually making an effort but are imperfect in their efforts.

What is the psychology at play here?

Yes, it must have been annoying for them - having to defend a BBC show because PC academics have criticised it!

I'm not reading the Daily Mail. I'll wait till the Guardian writes something about it then read that.

I glanced at it and they've got Seb Brooks as the defender of Who. Should have asked him where the missing episodes are. (NB: this is a joke, lets not argue. )

Oh the irony. The most racist mainstream newspaper in Britain accusing a show which is clearly opposed to Racism of being Racist. Really?

That's all you need to know. Move on.

Actually, no I'll write about the accusation anyhow. Not only is show not racist - it frequently champions not only inter-racial rights, but inter-species rights as well - but for those who want to look at its 'Everyman' tone is frequently spiritual.

That's the problem with things which are set up to appeal to everyone - sometimes, just sometimes, you can see how it's meant to appeal to your own cultural context, but not one which is alien to you (forgive the pun).

Doctor Who is frequently on the button when it champions mutual understanding as the end of conflict, not all out warfare, non more so than the overtly pacifist 'Doctor's Daughter' (but that's just one example).
