Is there a tablet that is as good as (or better than) a Kindle Fire for the same money (or less)?

Plenty out there, stick to the main brands, Samsung Galaxy and the Google Nexus should be first to check out, then move on to other well known brands.

For the same price the Nexus 7 or the Samsung galaxy tab 2 7.0 are your best bet.

Thanks for that, but they are both dearer. The Kindle Fire is £129.00.

For the exact price range of the kindle fire you could try

The Nook HD 8 GB - has access to google play now so it's like an android tablet, it has expandable memory and a high definition screen (£129)

The HP slate 7 (£129)

Acer iconia B1-A1. (£99)

Those are probably the best and most reputable brands in that price range. Specs wise they are comparable to the kindle fire, in some areas they exceed to specs of the fire.

Thanks. I might go for the Acer Iconia b1. It's £97.97 on Amazon at the mo. It is a birthday present for my 12 year-old Granddaughter, so it's the right price.

You might just want to bear in mind the Acer can't be connected to an external monitor, so if she wants to use it for games or similar you can't do that, with the Kindle you can.

I own an Acer and posted my thoughts on it on the other thread that is further down.

I have Acer Iconia B1 and it's a decent cheap tablet. Honestly, I wanted to buy Nexus 7, but when I learned that Nexus 7 doesn't have an SD card slot, I opted for the cheaper Iconia instead. I use it mainly for reading, occasional internet surfing and mirroring video onto my tv. If I were you, I'd never buy Kindle Fire as it uses customized version of Android and it has poor app support. No gmail, instagram or dropbox for instance. Although, Google Play technically can be installed, your Kindle Fire has to be rooted to do so and rooting voids your warranty.

Surely it depends on what you want to use it for. I want to get books (obviously) and newspapers which we cannot get on the Samsung Note! I have money from my family for a Kindle Fire and will probably go for that.

Just read the previous post about the Kindle Fire and now I am confused!

Why can't you get books or newspapers on your Note?

Consider saving a while longer and getting an iPad mini. Android, and Kindles even less, have few actual tablet apps compared to the iPad's 300,000+. You get what you pay for.

The android nexus 10 has a better screen than the ipad 4 and there are plenty of apps available on google play.

The ipad mini has the same sort of screen as the ipad 2 . Non 'retina' Not the best time to be buying an ipad anyway as they will be updated around September time and the minis should be getting a better screen.

The Kobo Arc is also £129 on WHSmith. It's probably the Kindle's biggest rival and runs Android 10.0. http://www.whsmith.co.uk/Products/Ko...onics+36144716

The Nexus 10 has only slightly more ppi than the iPad 4. Most people wouldn't even be able to tell the difference. In every other way the iPad 4's display is superior and are factory calibrated.

The Nexus 10 also has lousy build quality and poor battery life (around 4hours less) in comparison. The mini gets around 5.5 hours more.

Compared to the iPad, no, there is nowhere even close to being "plenty" of **tablet** "apps available" for Android tablets.

It could 5 months before the new iPads come out seeing as they came out in November last time. True, about the iPad mini likely getting a better screen. If that's important to you then wait. I think it may take a hit on battery life though.

The op wanted advise on tablets costing £129 and less and you're discussing Ipads and the Nexus10 that both cost more than double that, not much help on this thread.

It's turnned into the usual apple/Android battle

I think for that amount of money I'd be looking at the Acer Iconia - I'd not recommend a Kindle Fire as they are too locked into Amazon

We can but I want my OWN! We cannot get the Telegraph on the Note which is annoying as my husband likes to read it. Me, I can go for ages without reading a word of the rag! Anyway, the family never know what to buy me for my birthday so I decided this would be a good idea. I have sent for the Paperwhite as it would be a waste of money to get the Fire as we already have a tablet.

I was responding to the person that brought up the Nexus 10.

It is relevant and helpful to advise that buying a tablet based on price alone relegates you to a more limited functioning device based on tablet app availability.

I'd have a look at the Nexus 7. It's reasonably priced for the specs.

Ooops didn't see your later post.

Not a bad choice either.

Not that relevent really - I'm sure the op would expect a more expensive tablet to be quicker etc. It's abit like going on a car forum and someone saying they are looking at a Renault Clio and then someone suggesting saving up and getting a Mercdeds instead.
