This may be a repeat or a newer programme.
A documentary on the much revered "King of Soul."
His name may have been brought to some unfamiliar members of the public by the fact that I remember in a few store passenger lifts, in the late sixties, early seventies, the word "Redding" being scrawled in felt-tipped pen after the lift's maker's name on the control panels.

It's ironic that possibly his most remembered record; "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay," was made three days before he, "fell off it."

No, that's "literary licence."
His plane crashed into Lake Monona and he drowned, there was only one survivor from the tragedy, a non-swimmer.
Redding was a sad lost to the popular music industry and is credited with influencing many popular singers.

Thanks DR,great spot and how true about getting into lifts in the early seventies although by then the letters scrawled next to OTIS were more likely to be R.I.P.- here's a little more detail for Friday night and from what I can tell, the first programme is new while the other two are repeats. The live footage is phenomenal though. :-

21:00 Otis Redding: Soul Ambassador
Profile of the soul singer, documenting his childhood and career, including unseen home movies that reveal how his 1967 tour of Britain dramatically changed his life and music. Plus, footage of rare performances and intimate interviews with Redding's widow, daughter and previous band members Steve Cropper and Booker T

22:00 Otis Redding and Friends: Stax Volt Revue 1967
Concert filmed in Norway during the Stax tour of 1967, featuring artists signed to the record label. Includes live sets by Booker T & the MGs, Sam and Dave, Arther Conley, Eddie Floyd and the Mar-Keys. Plus, Otis Redding performs five songs, including Try A Little Tenderness and My Girl

23:00 Classic Soul at the BBC
Performances from the BBC archive by acclaimed soul singers, including Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Isaac Hayes, Dusty Springfield, Solomon Burke and Percy Sledge.

I'm a huge fan even though I was only 10 years old when he died (my older brothers were fans) and the first LP I ever bought was an Otis compilation in 1968.I have often felt that Otis is overlooked despite the wealth of material that survives him because he was only just getting started fame-wise when he was killed.Should be best remembered for being the only Black R+B/Soul artist who appeared at the Monterey Pop Festival 1967 (closed the Saturday night show) alongside Hendrix,The Who,Janis Joplin to name but a few.

I recently put up this thread in the Music Appreciation section to commemorate his 45th year of passing so it does no harm to give it a bump. :-

Thanks for the additional information, I'm into vinyl jukeboxes and "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" is one of my many Motown and Soul selections.

Whenever I hear his songs, the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end and it sends a shiver right through my body. Then I find myself tapping a foot and flinging myself all around wherever I might be.

Fantastic singer. Fantastic documentary.

And the 1967 Stax-Volt concert that followed was fantastic too. Otis, Sam and Dave, Booker T and the MGs. What a line-up!

Friday nights on BBC-4 really is the only time we seem to get decent music on TV these days. Or maybe I'm just getting old.

Great to see fellow fans around and about and 'Respect' to BBC4 which has been a bit of an oasis lately especially on a Friday.

Ever changing top four or five Otis songs for me but "(I've Got) Dreams To Remember" has always been one of them.It wasn't until tonight that I knew it was his wife Zelma who had given him the lyric in a poem she had written while he was away making history at Monterey.

Just caught up with this and loved it.

It does seem BBC are doing a series of programmes about soul artists on Fridays. This coming Friday, there is a Bobby Womack show and Marvin Gaye the following week.

Otis Reddings voice was so beautiful I was close to tears watching some of the footage.

I watched this, I had no idea he was married with children. I was just blown away by his stage presence and emotion in his voice. It's so tragic that he was taken so young. What might have.been during 70s and 80s. I also felt touched that he was treated like a star in this country when his own country was still segregating black people.
After watching it I just wish every contestant on The Voice and Xfactor would just give up before they start !

Can't think about Marvin Gaye without Tammi Terrell coming to mind, such a tragedy that she died so young.
Over twenty-three million hits on their most well known duet.

Just a "heads up" as this is on tonight.
Bobby Womack may not be familiar to everyone, but I'm sure a few will remember this film, where his song was used during the opening sequence.

These Friday night BBC4 music programmes are great. Otis was no exception. I only have to hear the first few seconds of I've Been Loving You Too Long or These Arms of Mine and I'm gone.

Started another thread for Bobby Womack, not that it'll do much business on here.

Thanks for the heads-up. Otis Redding had one of the best soul voices ever.

It makes me weep when numpties like Kanye West describe themselves as 'genius'. Marvin Gaye, Bobby Womack, Otis Redding, sam 'n Dave....sadly missed for their genuine genius.

Programmes don't come much better than the ones mentioned on this thread.

That includes the Bobby Womack programme as well.. The Bravest Man in the Universe album is terrific!

Listen and enjoy.....

Another thanks from me, missed this the first time around.

The most beautiful singer- could be raw and raucous, but also sweet and tender. Brilliant writer too- such an amazing body of work in such a short time.
