Always make my own and vary it using shredded cabbage (red and white - either or both), sliced onion (again red and/or white), grated carrot, lemon juice and mayonnaise. For presentation I sprinkle some dried chives on top.

I always get asked to do the coleslaw for family 'do's' and bbq's and it's always the one food item there is never any leftover of!

That's what puts me off making it more often as the only shop bought coleslaw I really like is M&S as it doesn't taste overpowered by onions which I hate raw.

When I make it I always use red cabbage, carrot, spring onion, mayo, white wine vinegar, salt and pepper and like others have said I make it the day before and it is lush.

One tip is to use full fat mayo as it will hold together better and not go watery. Hellemans 1/2 fat is useless for it!

Even better, make your own mayo - it's dead simple and relatively cheap to do as well

Egg yolks, oil and vinegar, whisked lightly into a yummy sauce
