I seem to be able to go without food for quite long periods of time. I mean days sometimes. I don't understand it. I hear people moaning about being hungry. I can have a cup of tea and it goes away. Do we all really have such different body metabolisms?

I'd be worried about bad breath, lol.

I think once you use up your emergency stores of glycogen, you go in to ketosis.

I went on the Atkins many years ago and my breath smelt like the hind end of a donkey. Never again..

I think the longest I could manage would be from waking up until tea time.

I think it's best to cut down on what's IN the food, rather than the amount of food on your plate. I'm guessing the Atkins diet would be very risky indeed!

is that what happens when you don't eat? I've never been told I've got bad breath. Though I use listerine quite a lot. The ironic thing is I do so because I hate tea breath.

I am not anorexic btw. It has nothing to do with how I want to look or any problem with weight. I'm slim but not skinny. I don't look like Christian Bale in The Machinist, how did he manage to get that skinny to make that film?

Something to do with ketosis when you've got no carbs left to burn. Think it takes 24 hours or something? Not sure..

Re Christian Bale - a quick Google says he had a can of tuna, an apple and a few coffees a day!

Probably. Although habit makes a difference.

I do a restricted calorie diet, which in my case means skipping breakfast and lunch and having 600 kcal in the evening, one (or two non-consecutive) days a week. I get hungry. After a couple of months it got easier, but never easy. I keep it up because it's hard in a way that I can handle.

I could go days I'm sure, but I'd have rank breath as my body would be metabolizing stored fat for its energy.

I remember once being really ill and not managing to keep anything down for about 3 days. I was eating little bits but throwing it straight back up...does that count?

I have sometimes done 24 hours if hungover

I suppose I'm forunate that I have very rarely felt hungry, maybe a bit peckish sometimes but that soon passes. As much as I love food and cooking I always fit my eating around my OH. I've never deliberately gone without food but when he went away recently I suddenly realised that, at 7pm, I hadn't eaten a thing all day. I still wasn't hungry though but had something to eat because it was the sensible thing to do.

that is exactly what I''m like. Some times I have to force myself to eat simply because I know I need to.

Having an eating disorder, restrict most days, longest I went without food was a few years ago was for 4 days? As much as I dislike eating, I always try to eat something as I'm paranoid about slowing my metabolism down and gaining weight, paradox of an illness.

I think a person can survive for 2 weeks without food completely if they have water, is that true?

I eat between 6 and 8 pm. I probably don't eat most days then until about 3 or 4 pm. I'm sure this is no good at all but breakfast isn't for me really except at the weekend when I'll have a brunch type thing.

I always have breakfast every morning without fail, how long I then go before I eat again depends how busy I am but it's not unusual to go all day with nothing until my evening meal.

I've just recovered from gastric flu and didn't eat any solids for 3 days - not through choice! - by the 3rd day I could barely function, I was dizzy, faint, lethargic and had no concentration whatsoever.

About 20 hours before i turn into a right moody mare. Quite often in my last job that i left a month ago, from dinner the night before (7/8pm) i wouldn't eat again until about 4pm when i got in from work.
I used to be in bed by 10pm, up at 5am and in work for 6,30, quite often it was too busy to eat, so i'd wait until i got in.

Ages. Bit of a problem really. I love food and cooking but I'm a little too adept at just doing without at times.

I once went without food food for five days because I had ran out of money before payday. I drank plenty of water and didn't feel too bad. The first thing I did when I got paid was get a chinese takeaway. My tastebuds really perked up and the taste of the was heightened quite a bit.

I went a week once when I had a bad case of Gastro Intritus. Also went about 5 days after a car crash where my face/teeth were injured (amongst other things).

Otherwise I can miss a day here or there without worrying.

Me too but whenever I do OH says 'you've got to eat something'. Why? I'm not going to die for lack of one days food and I always drink plenty of fluids. It's not as if I'm skinny either.

A couple of weeks ago I couldn't eat for a whole day after a fine needle aspiration on my submandibular gland and I reckon that's the longest I've ever gone without food. Usually I like to have something to eat every couple of hours at least.

To answer your question, yes, we all have different metabolic rates.
