Pick Of The Pops - Radio 2
This new thread is designed for music and singles chart lovers to add their comments about Pick Of The Pops with Tony Blackburn on Radio 2, broadcast every Saturday afternoon between 1pm and 3pm.
Later today he will be playing this week in 1974 and 1981. For myself, it is always a date and time with the radio each week since he took over and presented the show live. Although only doing the show since late 2010 it is already as if the show has always been his. He has made it his own very quickly. Whatever anyone wants to say about Pick Of The Pops, say it here from now on!

June 88 charts were quality ![]() That could well turn out to be a minority view! I'm amused that the first person to respond to this thread has mentioned June 1988 for some reason. Just about the lowest point for charts in the entire 1980's. Have we crossed paths before, regarding a certain track that topped the UK chart mid June 1988? If so, I'm not falling into your trap! ![]() A record many years ahead of it's time will likely get played later in the June 1974 first hour. The Sparks were at No2 this week that year with This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us, which Elton John described at the time as such a good record that it was too good to be a hit. He was very wrong, and it certainly went against the general grain of the other music out at that point in time. It has always sounded at least 5 years before it's time, and remains to this day a timeless classic. |

I am personally going off the show. It's the same years week after week with no chart from the last 20 years ever appearing. Look at this week, there is barely any gap between the 2 years featured.

Most listeners to Pick Of The Pops do not want to hear charts since the year 2000 for a start, although 2001 has been played before. I'm guessing it's aiming at 35 to 55 year old music lovers, but did play 1961 last week, which would appeal to people of almost 70, so in the hosts age bracket. |

Barely a gap? The singles charts of 1974 and 1981 may be just 7 years apart, but in music terms they are light years away from each other. More happened between those two dates in music than in most of the entire 60 years of pop music to date.

We are always hearing 1981 and I suspect again we will hear the delights of Stars on 45 again! |

Pick Of The Pops is poptastic show. Love the music played on the show every week. The jingles are brilliant too. Tony makes the show uplifting. A show which everyone must not miss.

I love Tony's style and he plays songs other stations leave out, a major plus for me. I tend to listen only to 1977-1985 though, as they're what interests me.

Looking forward to the 1981 chart. I'm presuming it will be the 6th June chart which, according to my list, hasn't been featured before.

1 June 1981 was a Monday and the chart for the week ending 6th June came into effect on Wednesday 3rd (it was announced on BBC Radio 1 at 12.45pm on Tuesday 2nd). I think w/e 6th June 1981 is a better chart, it features two great tracks from Kool & The Gang and Odyssey as new entries. |

I've always thought the better slot for Tony on a Saturday would be breakfast, 7.00 till 10.00 with an hour of number ones from 9.00. When Brian Matthew retires from SOTS that might happen - unless Tony retires first!

1981 was one of my favourite years in music, it is the chart from the week of my 15th birthday so really looking forward to the 2-3pm hour.
Tony is a fantastic presenter of the show and of course during 1981 he was Radio 1's Top 40 host on a Sunday so it fits so perfectly. |

I think most listeners of the programme want to hear charts from the sixties, seventies and eighties not the nineties and 00's. I'm most interested in the charts from the sixties and seventies, not early sixties though. Regarding charts from the nineties and 00's it must be remembered which station this show is on, most Radio 2 listeners wouldn't want to listen to rap/hip hop/rave etc, maybe there could be an alternative Pick of the Pops on Radio 1 to cover those years.

Apparently Tony is playing just Vinyl records soon on POTP's. Must be some new ones as there could be scratches on some old BBC ones?

Great show, Tony has breathed new life into it, we always record the show and listen to it with a few beers in the evening, who knows, possibly a barby tonight! Quote:

![]() However I've just checked the top 20 for the first week in June, and although it ain't brilliant, it isn't as bad as it should be, SAW must have taken a holiday in early June as only a miserable effort from Kylie sits in the Top 10. Now June 1981 is a different story, cracking summer Ian Botham, Royal Wedding and all that - good times, good music. A nice touch would be to play Hi-De-Hi by Paul Shane & The Yellowcoats which had only just dropped out of the Top 40 this week in 1981. |
