You're right. It does on mine too! Must be the rapping intro that did for it. That did spoil a good tune I thought.

Two mistakes in 5 minutes.

Normally passing over a Donna Summer track would be a shame, but not in this case, the other Donna was a much better choice, with Joy & Pain.

Always had a soft spot for Pink Sunshine

Be gobsmacked if Tone plays Just Keep Rockin' at 13. another great track

I was right Tony sounded like he'd never heard of it

Tape it? Very 1989 if I may say so.

It's available on the BBC catch up / listen again player you know.

I swear that I don't remember anything whatsoever about 'Fuzzbox'.Never heard the song, and quite honestly don't even remember the band, not even the name. The late 80's was when I did start to lose interest in the charts though. When Tony plays stuff from the 90's,I don't even bother to listen. There is the occasional good song amongst an ocean of unlistenable dross.

Just as it seemed we could go through a whole 1989 chart without that generic Waterman sound, up comes the appalling Sinitta trash, with trademark noise production. At least Soul II Soul's excellent Back To Life was No1.

Cyndi Lauper is 60 today.

I noticed he pronounced Cyndi's surname l-ow-per, rather than l-aw-per, which is what I thought was the right pronunciation but then he commented about her birthday and he pronounced it the other (correct?) way when he said it then trust me to notice such things

My dad was joking in the car earlier on about the 'Vinyl countdown' joke someone had sent in, from the Vinyl program a couple of weeks ago

Cruel Summer. I'm sure they have played the 1983 original and not the 1989 remix version. I hated the remix so much at the time, and this ain't it! It's the proper 1983 one. What was it that Tone said about "we know what we're doing here you know" a few weeks ago to a texter? ”

Gladys Knight - Licence To Kill. She sang Licence to Lilt.

Re-release. Cruel Summer was Brilliant. 1989 was brilliant. The 80's were brilliant.

Far from it.

Mistakes that I can recall to add to the Bananarama error.

Re-recorded version of Chas & Dave's "Rabbit", "It's Raining" by Shakin' Stevens being played instead of "it's Raining" by Darts and Tony announcing a few weeks back that his "vinyl special" was the first time ever POTP would be an all vinyl show clearly forgetting about all the years that it would have been vinyl week in, week out.

The 1989 chart from this week back then actually sounded much better than I expected, with the exception of the dire Sinitta track, and the very dated and awful Prince movie track Batdance. Never understood how that was his highest charting hit at the time, even with a film behind it. One of his worst ever singles.

My favourite Pick Of The Pops mistake goes back to September 1999, when Alan Freeman was still presenting the show, and he played the hits of September 1982. I have the edition on tape. At No3 instead of playing Save A Prayer by Duran Duran, he played Like A Prayer by Madonna, who was still 18 months away from her first hit. I was furious as hell at the time for spoiling my recording, but actually find it quite amusing to have now. But it was a real corker of an error!

It's what we've always called Cliff in our house

I always seem to be disagreeing with Rich but I hadn't heard Batdance for ages, though it came up in discussion a couple of weeks ago on holiday, and I thought it sounded pretty fresh and years ahead if its time.

Oh and I always still say tape when I'm sky plussing although in the end I listened to it on me iPod on me way to and in the bookies.

I didn't win owt btw

Dis-agree away JBO!

I really dis-agree on Batdance. As soon as I heard it again today I immediately thought "Christ that's dated". It reeks of it's time and no other to me. Ahead of its time, never. The track from Sparks that got played on the 1974 show a couple of weeks back was a real record ahead of its time, as I mentioned previously. It's interesting that Prince has vanished as a force in music and has been almost invisible for a large number of years now. That surprises me a bit.

I thought your "Clit" spelling was a genuine error and was expecting you to edit it, but then began wondering!

What odds would you give me on Cliff having another No1 hit I wonder? I'd wager a bet.

Yes, according to the POTP website, Cruel Summer was taken from the Now 1983 album. Assuming that Tony refers to the Guinness book of Top 40 charts ( and he often quotes trivia listed at the bottom of the corresponding page), it only lists the song as Cruel Summer, and not Remix, where as other remix songs get listed. This could be where the error occured, although other sources do list it as Remix, including the Guinness Hit Singles edition!

Hurrah! I'm now listening to POTP 1989. And 'Licence To Kill' still sounds good! Or should that be 'Licence To Kilt' as occy posted!

Yes Robbie, BUT!!!!!.......

Why does she sound like she is clearly singing "Kilt" or as I wrote "Kitt" rather than the word in the song "KILL". It's bizarre.

I have always found this odd. It definitely sounds like she sings kilt and not kill. In the film she clearly sings kill in the version used on the opening titles. Thats the only time you hear her sing it right!

What happens is Gladys does sing "kill" but just at the point she finishes, the backing singers come in with "to kill", making it sound like "kilt"

It bugged me for years too till I noticed it .

With all due respect, I've given it a couple of listens, and watched the video on YT as well, and this does not seem to be the explanation JBO. The first two times she says it, she is not being interupted or oversung by any backing singers, and on the third time she says it correctly! Then goes back to saying it like "Kitt" again on the next verse all over again. Right at the end she clearly ends with a "Kill".

So it still bugs me, and even if your own explanation is 100% correct it still makes you wonder why such a curiousity was not picked up at the recording. It's just utterly weird. Even in June 1989 when I recorded the song off the radio to tape, it puzzled me to the point of irritation. I don't think you have given the definite answer however. Our ears are not deceiving us, and it's not some kind of audio illusion I'm sure.

Duran Duran don't sing A View To A Kilt / Kitt do they!
