Someone tweet him and ask if he can pronounce it that way he did in 1980.

Something is going to get missed out soon. Can't fit all the remaining songs in. Having said that, they way he has been cutting them short......

Word Girl survived. Anyone have a clue what this song is about???

I read the other day that the "word" was a pseudonym used by a song writer to describe the girl as an anomymous person. I think the meaning does a bit deeper. I think the girl is describing a relationship in which she was a victim of unrequited love and verbal abuse. Then in the line "oh baby, then I knew" she realised that he didn't love her. I think the reference to "your flesh and blood," could be that she discovers that she is pregnant and the child becomes a target for the verbal abuse. A dark song, but a gorgeous voice singing it.

It's 1977 and 1981 next week. 1981 should be good if this chart is played but I seem to recall there were better charts earlier in 1981.

I like 'Ghost Town' new at 21, 'Body Talk', 'Swords Of A 1000 Men', 'Chariots Of Fire', 'Funeral Pyre', 'I Want To Be Free', 'All Stood Still, 'Will You', 'Stand And Deliver', 'Going Back To My Roots', 'One Day In Your Life' and 'Being With You'.

In 1985 The Crowd was no 1 with "You'll Never Walk Alone". I have just watched the video of it. DLT is at the back of the video and Rolf Harris is singing. The video wouldn't be shown today on the BBC due to obvious reasons. Still it was raising money for a good cause.

I notice you didn't mention Red Sovine. The chance of that being played are somewhere between zilch and zero.

Tony Blackburn would be more likely to play that than some of the New Wave records although I hope he doesn't.

Only caught last 20 minutes of today's show, but looking forward to catching up with what I'd missed. Was going to check out the Crowd video, didn't realise it contained DLT and Rolf!

If either of them get convicted then that's another few TOTP episodes BBC Four would probably have to skip if they reach 1985.

I loved music in 1981 but it did have a slight lull around June. I have put in bold 2 songs I did particularly like then. Ironically, Tony did feature 1981 exactly 2 years earlier ie 23.6.12 so may play much the same selection of songs as then.

I agree about 'Going Back To My Roots' it is a fantastic record, full of energy. Adam and Ants however should have been strangled at birth. There is one good thing to say about 'Stand and Deliver', it is light years better than the atrocity he followed it with.

I can't wait for your critique of the 1985 chart. How can anyone justify this. It was abysmal. The best songs ('Icing on the Cake' and 'Call Me')were skipped. The only saving grace was Katrina. How I hate that Madonna song. It is the kind of rubbish that Smooth Radio play on a loop. So she is crazy for him. God, I would seriously doubt anyone who said that to me with so little passion in her voice. The chart was a snooze fest. Gary Moore would have livened it up. I feel for Tony having to sit through an hour of this. At least he enjoyed 1971. He said so enough times.

What an incredibly bigoted statement. Just focus on the music you like and allow others to do the same.

And as for Prince Charming, I think telling young people to stay true to themselves without fearing or being swayed by ridicule isn't exactly the worst message a pop record has ever contained.

Regarding Prince Charming. I wasn't commenting on the message behind the song, if you can describe it as a song. My observation was directed to it being devoid of any musical content whatsoever.

As for Adam and the Ants. Was there ever a more overhyped talentless bunch to make number one in the charts?

Another song that was ruined by a cover version IMO was Lesley Gore's 'It's My Party' a song about a girl madly in love seeing her boyfriend snogging the face off her best friend and leaving her humiliated and heartbroken. The Dave Stewart Barbara Gaskin monstrosity sounds like she was just pissed off because he had nicked her last Rolo.”

I have the opposite view. The Dave Stewart version adds real emotion to the song, whereas Lesley Gore is happily singing along as if nothing had happened.

It should have been played. Sorry Tony, if you're reading, but selective missing out of songs doesn't work - there should be a rule that ALL climbers in the top 10 should be played and to miss out playing the biggest climber inside the top 20 is a bit out of order...”

Almost completely agree - this is a major fault with POTP since Tony took over. The movement of the chart should take precedence not Tony's own opinions on songs. The bit I disagree about is Ole Ola, superb song.

Back in the day the chart show would never miss out a high climbing record like that, unless it had been banned for some reason. This one is inoffensive but awful. We need to remember that although we as chart anoraks follow the old charts and look them up before hand to see what is going to be played, we are very much in the minority. The vast majority of listeners to POTP couldn't care less. All they want is to hear some nice oldies they can sing along to, that maybe provoke a few memories along the way. Also because of time constraints it has to be quality over quantity. On that basis with that 1978 chart there is no way that the Rod song would be played in preference to say the Bee Gees or Blondie. Unlike most people who post here, the majority of listeners are just not interested enough to care about records being missed. They would probably be more peeved if some awful ones were included.

Another point is that Scots make up about 8% of the UK population. So for the majority of listeners that song is supporting a foreign team.”

Totally disagree. As per my previous post, the charts should take precedence. People want to hear rarer tracks on POTP, not just the same old, same old from Blondie and Bee Gees. And who is to say what is a good song and what is a bad one? You think Ole Ola is awful, I think it is brilliant. Why should one person's opinion carry more weight than another's when it comes to choosing songs on a show like POTP?

Phil Swern is the producer. Tony does not choose what gets played. It was always the case that some records were missed even back in Dale's time.

Dale generally only skipped songs going down in most cases though. Considering Punk tracks always get skipped but they weren't when Dale presented proves that Tony does have a say on what is played.
