Ah, the wanderer returns! Happy Birthday x 2!
By the way, I chanced across an old post of yours today, one from almost two years ago, where you posted that you wished 'Drowning In Berlin' by The Mobiles was available to download from iTunes. Another poster in either this or another thread posted the same wish a few days ago. So I checked. I'm not sure when it was added but 'Drowning In Berlin' is now available to download, as is its parent album from 1982. The last time I checked, whenever that was, it wasn't available so it is a fairly recent addition. Of course I just had to download the track... |

I don't quite understand some of your comments or your attitude? It's not about any particular song. I think it is terrible myself but what is the point of a retro chart show where the presenter and producer just picks and chooses what they want to play?

Re It's My Party. I've said before that I was totally obsessed by the Dave Sewart/Barbra Gaskin version when it came out. The darker feel to it makes it much more interesting than the original. You get the impression she's going to kill Judy and Johnny for their cheating!

Re. 1985. Agree with everything apart from you liking 'Crazy For You'. I always found that to be sooo boring. Prefer Madonna's upbeat songs. BTW I notice that you don't have a copy of 'Icing on the Cake' You do now. I have just sent it to you. |

Utter nonsense. Done a survey have you? How come Johnnie Walker gets away with playing punk? And this is on a Sunday which is when Radio 2 is at its most conservative. As for Tony's taste well outside soul music his tastes have always been bloody awful.
As for the documentary I saw that and it was the pompus Doreen Davies. Someone who most presenters hated. Having out of touch idiots like her at the station proved how out of touch the station was at the time. Johnnie plays punk but nothing like a whole programme of it. Tony plays punk. He played Sham 69 and Plastic Bertrand (stretch the point a tad I know) both in a recept edition. Tony's taste in music is excellent. He is also very much in tune with the tastes of his audience. Just listen to his show on Magic and his rapport with the listeners. Doreen Davis. Why did you have to be so rude and nasty. Have you ever met the lady? |

Why do you have to be so rude in your replies? Doreen Davies is pompus. Firstly she said 'we didn't play Heavy Metal or punk because parents mind find it offensive'. Who cares what parents thought? The station wasn't supposed to be for them and unless the songs featured questionable lyrics how can you be offended by certain genres? That is just an excuse to not play things you don't like. Besides what Radio 1 did back then isn't relevant to Radio 2 today. Radio 1 banned relax but Wogan was quite happy to play it years later on Radio 2.

Tony if you are looking in you may recall this from September 1993 with James Whale on late night ITV.
This is a show with James Whale which had Tony Blackburn and Alan Freeman as his guests, along with Paul Burnett, and also joining alongside them at one point is Doreen Davis, which may be of interest to the readers on here who have been mentioning her. Doreen gets introduced at 27 minutes into the show, but Tony & Alan have contributions throughout. http://youtu.be/lFJr8J1qDnM |

. No record is more "dodgy" than any other. ?
As for me, I will refrain from this forum until sanity returns. Apart from Rich Tee, ClareB, IanD and one or two others, you are living on a distant planet as for as I am concerned. BTW with the exception of those mentioned above, it might be a good idea if you could learn to write properly, spell words correctly and use proper punctuation. If you can manage that, the rest of us might understand what you are going on about. |

Now I know you have lost it. Are you seriously saying that that all records are of equal quality? Does that mean that Bohemian Rhapsony is on the same level as the Birdie Song, Bridge Over Troubled Water has the same quality as Shadup Your Face or that Ole Ole is on par with Kayleigh. If the answer to any of the above is yes,I strongly suggest you should give up listening to music altogether because you haven't a clue about quality. Just because a record got to number four in the charts didn't make it good. It just means that enough stupid people went out and bought it.

Gatherer.....Shaddap You Face!
![]() David, let's follow the host of POTP doctrine ourselves here and not take things so seriously. It's only music! Please don't pick me up for the bad grammar in the Joe Dolce track above, it's not my fault.

Actually back the in the seventies and eighties Radio 1 was very much targeted at adults as well as teenagers. Radio 1 in say 1980 was very like Radio 2 is now. It was only with the Bannister era that Radio 1 targeted the younger demographic.

I've said before, I hate this cherry picking of songs in retro charts on the radio for whatever reason. Thank goodness there are some DJs on the internet doing retro charts with all the top 40 songs.
Anyway, some comments re the 1985 chart: June 15 1985 19 LOVING THE ALIEN - DAVID BOWIE - I've said before that I'm not really a Bowie fan, but I prefer this to some of his other songs, especially from the 80s. 16 JOHNNY COME HOME - FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS - Not one you hear too often now, which is a shame. Like this better than She Drives Me Crazy, which drives me crazy! 15 ALL FALL DOWN - FIVE STAR - I've unashamedly mentioned my liking for Five Star before. This is ok, but prefer their later hits. 13 CHERISH - KOOL AND THE GANG - Unusual subject for a song - a man singing to his terminally ill partner, but I don't think people take too much notice of the lyrics and see it as just a generic love song, which is a shame. 12 WALKING ON SUNSHINE - KATRINA AND THE WAVES - One of those songs that I don't mind if I'm in a good mood, but would definitely get turned off if I was in bad mood. 11 FRANKIE - SISTER SLEDGE - I can see why this get dissed, compared to their disco stuff, but I've got a soft spot for it because it so different and I love the old-fashioned doo-wop sound. The video is terrible, though! 10 HISTORY - MAI TAI - Bit cheesy, but enjoy hearing once in a while, along with their other hit Body And Soul. Another terrible vid, though. 09 CRAZY FOR YOU - MADONNA - Oh, my fave Madonna song, as I've said before. Should definitely have been a number one. 08 THE WORD GIRL - SCRITTI POLITTI FEAT. RANKING ANN - Love, love, love this! Got the vid and TOTP performances on my ipad. Green has got such a fantastic voice. Definitely in my top 10 80s songs. 07 OUT IN THE FIELDS - GARY MOORE AND PHIL LYNOTT - Probably wouldn't have been aware of this as much at the time if it hadn't been on Now 5. Cracking tune! 06 A VIEW TO A KILL - DURAN DURAN - Love this! Never seen the film but it's a great Bond theme and such a cheesy video - "The name's Bon, Simon Le Bon". 04 SUDDENLY - BILLY OCEAN - I know this is a bit slushy, but I'd much sooner hear this than either of Billy's number one hits. 19 - PAUL HARDCASTLE - Such a stand out song at the time, because of the subject matter and the n-n-n-nineteen sample. I remember Dale playing a different version once on POTP, but I don't think it was the slower one Tony mentioned. 02 KAYLEIGH - MARILLION - Another one in the chart that is in my top 10 80s songs. Love the story of the song, and the imagery in the lyrics. 01 YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE - CROWD - Like with the Hillsborough disaster, I'll always remember the day of the fire at Valley Road. Think I've got the single knocking about somewhere, as we bought it at the time. There's certainly a eclectic mix of people on the record, quite a few a didn't even recognise when I watched the vid on youtube. Not played 20 - BEN - MARTI WEBB - Surprise, surprise, they didn't bother to dig this out. Don't particularly like the song, but have more time for this than Michael JackSon's version having followed Ben Hardwick's story on That's Life at the time. 18 JIMMY NAIL - Don't care if I'm in the minority, I think this is a pretty decent cover. Can still remember how shocked I was hearing Jimmy sing for the first time on Auf Weidersehen Pet. 17 CALL ME - GO WEST - Like all of Go West's hits, though I'd go for We Close Our Eyes or Don't Look Down over this. It's a shame they didn't have a longer chart career. 14 ICING ON THE CAKE - STEPHEN 'TIN TIN' DUFFY - One of those songs I quite enjoy hearing on the rare occassions it's played on the radio, but haven't got on CD or MP3. 05 OBSESSION - ANIMOTION - Should have been played, as it was top 5 and one you don't hear all that often. I'm the opposite of you Clare, in that I think it was downhill all the way with Five Star from this first single onwards. Kool & The Gang with Cherish, and they were on a roll of catchy and sizable hits yet almost immediately afterwards it all dried up and they were gone, which I'm not sure would have been predicted in mid 1985. Oddly enough Kool & The Gang are one of the top represented groups on my iPod with about 10 of their tracks, although Cherish is not one of them! I loved the fact that Sister Sledge got to No1 in the summer of 1985. Trouble was that I was disappointed with the song that took them there. Much rather it was one of their fine disco tracks, or the re-release of Thinking Of You the previous year. I can't work out what it was about their track Frankie that made it so hugely popular. The summer of 1984 had all been about Frankie, and in 1985 a large part of that summer was too, but without Holly Johnson this time. A View To A Kill is one of the best Bond themes and in my opinion just about one of the best Bond films too. I recommend you watch it. I must have seen it a dozen times and if I notice it is on TV will always re-watch it. Grace Jones is in the film and the villain is Christopher Walken. Roger Moore is my favourite Bond without doubt. Had not heard Suddenly by Billy Ocean for a number of years and I think it held up quite well. You mentioned "either" of Billy Ocean's No1 hits. As far as the UK is concerned he only had the one, shortly after this, When The Going Gets Tough. Although he did top the charts in the USA with a couple during this period, Caribbean Queen & There'll Be Sad Songs. The track 19 by Paul Hardcastle certainly made an impact. Just coming on 16 when it hit the top I recall vividly myself and others my age taking on board what this track was saying and being shocked and appalled that the average age of the combat soldier in the Vietnam war was just a mere teenage 19 years old. A war that cost 58,000 of them. It disgusts me, and for what in the end? The song ended up parodied by Rory Bremner, and people kept saying n-n-n-n for ages, me included. Then he goes and does the theme to late 80's TOTP! Kayleigh by Marillion stands the test of time. I had liked them a lot from the previous year with their much more modest charting and harder edged hits Punch & Judy and Assassing. So to The Crowd, You'll Never Walk Alone. Sigh. My brother went and bought this record at the time. This was the beginnings of the dubious charity record get togethers triggered by Band Aid only 6 months earlier. In the meantime we had already had We Are The World, another charity track my brother bought. I recall laughing at him when a single I'd bought, Move Closer by Phyllis Nelson knocked the one he had bought, We Are The World, off the top spot. He laughed back at me a week later when she got knocked off No1 after just a week. Yes, the Crowd single was well meaning I suppose, associated with the Bradford Stadium Fire in May 1985 but was it really needed? It was a slippery slope, and Gerry Marsden was at it again after Hillsborough doing another one of his old songs as a disaster charity hit. I almost get the feeling that some people thrive on this kind of tragedy and disaster, almost like people that seem to enjoy a good funeral. It all looks a bit unedifying looking back now, and I thought so at the time myself. In terms of the mentioned tracks not played, that Jimmy Nail cover of Rose Royce was always surprisingly good, almost an equal but in a different way, to the original recording. It's a very good example of doing a cover version of a classic hit but making it different enough in another equally good and quality way. Who would have thought it? On paper the idea should have sounded excruciatingly bad, but ended up marvellously inspired and well produced. Have to agree on Animotion, Obsession. A very typical sounding middle 80's track, and if POTP is to play those that are not frequently heard much anymore then this would have been a good inclusion for sure. Today Pick Of The Pops will be playing the hits from this week in 1977 and 1981. Just 4 short years apart, although there's quite some difference between those two years, much more than 4 years would suggest on the face of it. Radio 2 @ 1pm |

You'd think I'd know my 1988 UK No. 1s, but for some reason I'd got it into my head that Billy Ocean got to No. 1 with Get Out Of My Dreams... That maybe because it seems to get played a lot on 80s radio shows.
I can't really knock charity singles because of their good intentions, but there's only really Band Aid that gets played now. The best thing about them is youtubing the videos to see who was on them. 2 great years, imo, today. Hope the pick of songs does them justice! |

It went down anyway. It's a good job virtually nobody tapes tracks from the radio anymore Tony, as you would have just p**ssed off a lot of people by that spoiler at the beginning of Fanfare For The Common Man. |
