I think the backing vocalists sing "Guilt" just as Gladys sings "kill" so it sounds like "kilt". I must admit I never noticed this until I read this thread!

Listening to the song again I think the backing singers may be singing "kill it".

I don't think Gladys has had this much discussion about her songs for years!

A true pro, he'll spend extra time recording shows rather than have someone look after the show for him.

I've really had a hard repetitive listen to the "offending" lyric over lunchtime via earphones, and I have yet another explanation slightly different from yours.

Seems like Gladys does infact probably sing "Kill", but as she finishes off singing the word, with the "ki(ll)" a backing comes in, which sort of loudly whispers "To Kill".

The end of Gladys singing Kill, and the rather sharp sounding "T" in the backing "To Kill" overlap, leading to this "Kilt" sound.

Gladys - Licence To Ki(ll)
Backing - (T)o Kill

So the bits in brackets are sung together, leading to the issue. If you ask me that is an amazing mistake to have produced that single like that, just a quarter second would have made all the difference.

It would never have happened if "The Pips" had remained on backing for the '89 Bond theme!

Sorry didn't I say exactly that last night?

Watch the video at 1.18, 2.34 and 3.37, the backing singers, or more likely, the models playing the part of backing singers are clearly miming "to kill" immediately after Knight sings "kill".

Let this be an end to it.

You're right JBO (and RT!). The backing singers / models definitely sing / mime "to kill".

Thank goodness that's been sorted out!

Of course you did JBO, I should have re-read back before posting my analysis! Well done on it. I eventually agreed.

The end of the matter for sure.....24 years later.

I would tend to agree. I absolutely adore the excellent Chic but Donna Summer for me defined the disco era.

Pick Of The Pops currently playing this week back in 1982, a historic week, that I think still stands to this day. The No1 record jumped from No33 to No1, the biggest jump ever.

The first hour's chart from this week in 1969 was historic too, as it was the week that the Beatles final ever UK No1 single was de-throned from the top.

Looking forward to the 1986 chart. I'm guessing it'll be the 12/7. I wonder if he'll play It's Orrible Being In Love When You're 8 and half! It's probably a good job that The Real Thing's Can't Get By Without You is falling in the chart, or he'd probably play the original and not the remix version.

It should be the 5 July chart.

The chart for the week ending 12 July 1986 was announced on Tuesday 8th July. The official chart moved to a Sunday announcement in August 1987.

Someone made a good point re Chic's back catalogue that back then the production teams didn't get artist credits. IIRC, they made the point that if Spacer, Notorious, Sister Sledge's out put etc etc had been released as "The Chic Org featuring (artist)" a la Timbaland etc, more woudl eb aware of how prolific Nile's work was...

Looks like you were all alone today Alcockell! Where have all the listeners gone? I had to miss it, but will catch it up on the beeb player thing.

About July 1986 is where the UK singles chart began to go off the boil for me, after 8 or 9 years of great consistent Top 10's, 20's and 40's.

The new Nile Rodgers & Chic album that came out last week is going to be my next purchase without hesitation! During his set at Glastonbury I was surprised by two or three tracks he played that I had no idea about his input into.

I liked the music in July-October 1986 but then it went downhill in November, never to recover.

I am listening to POTP on I-player now and, contrary to popular myth, Samantha Fox was not a one-hit wonder!

I usually find 1973 charts a bit bland, and had just heard some of the songs on the Double Top 20 show on Smooth. (Yes I know POTP was broadcast first though).
