Just make sure if you put a cake out in the rain that it has raisins in it instead, it may save you!

Pleased that he played the full 7 minutes of MacArthur Park.

In the middle of all these great summer 1968 hits how the hell did this terrible Des O'Connor song make it all the way to the top?

Reminds me of when Morecambe & Wise used to ridicule Des O'Connor, and say that he has a criminal record, this one!

The older generation must have been in healthy record buying mode at times back then still, as I cannot imagine anyone under at least 50 buying that song.

Interesting that he mentioned crackles on that Garry Mills record he played, but did not state he was playing it on vinyl, as surely he would have done? There again, a CD or digital version would surely not have been released with crackles. Interesting.

July 1980, great hit singles throughout.

But there was no TOTP during this month & it was also one of the coolest and dullest July's in England in the 20th century!

Great 1980 tunes so far, and three so far) of them (Gibson Brothers, Gap Band and Diana Ross) showed up on the first TOTP after the strike.

Just a word on that 1961 hit by Eddie Cochrane, Weekend. What an abject rip off of Summertime Blues that was!

A serious bone to pick with Tony & his producer this week, justified this time I think. But before I say it, I'll add I like Crying by Don McClean and bought it last year on iTunes, however......

Crying is the ONLY record going DOWN in the 1980 top ten singles this week! This is a well heard standard track, yet as Tony likes to stress POTP plays songs not often heard but has passed over the chance to play an excellent and rising Paul McCartney single rarely heard nowadays, yet a top tenner, Waterfalls.

Jump To The Beat has surely got to be one of the best singles ever made by a girl of just 13.

I've got my whistle out!

I adore Odyssey too. Quality singles all of them. Amazing this was their first to chart since Native New Yorker at the beginning of 1978, and went all the way.

Gatherer, I must admit that today's 1980 chart has been one of the most blatant examples of what some on here have been complaining about, I will admit that entirely.

Plus, FOUR cover versions, Darts, Leo Sayer, Don McClean & Detroit Spinners in place of original 1980 release singles.

Xanadu is one of the earliest tracks I recall first hand hearing Tony play on Radio 1 on my first ever radio, a Harrier Pilot!

Wonder if Olivia would've done a TOTP with Xanadu had it been on at the time. Lucky for the BBC Repeats it only exisits a short clip on the show.

I'm a massive fan of Odyssey as well. Native New Yorker and Inside Out are even better than Use It Up. Must admit I don't remember the Darts version of Let's Hang On. Not up to their usual standard and not surprising it was their last hit. It sounded like a tribute band version of the original. To be fair to Detroit Spinners their cover version was something different and was a medley. I preferred it to the Number 1 they'd just had (another Four Seasons cover!) and it's by far my favourite version of Cupid.

It says on the Music Played webpage Rich, that the Garry Mills track was taken from a CD entitled Vinyl On CD. It would be from the Phil Swern collection which includes many CD's of exactly that, hard to find vinyl tracks put on CD. Saying that, this track is available on a commercially available CD collection entitled 1961 British Hit Parade, a series that until recently boasted every Top 50 track included on a collection which came out once a year. This started with 1952 and went up to 1962. Unfortunetly the copyright laws have now altered, and 1963 won't be allowed to be released for another 20 years. Many of the tracks put on this collection have been taken directly from the original 45s, so yes there are crackles on some of these older rarer tracks that never made it to a major CD company.
