Even more surprising about Samantha Fox is the fact that she had three top 10 hits in the US, two of which reached the top 5.

Thanks - they seem to have kept it quiet this week although their website is now updated

Finally caught up with the 1973 and 1986 edition's from last weekend, late yesterday on the catch up, and infact 1986 sounded better than I imagined it would. Loved the final big Bucks Fizz hit, sounded even better than I recalled, but the last ever Wham! single that was at No1 was a weak affair, sounded it at the time, and still does.

Tony currently about to play the Top Ten singles this week in 1975. Just hearing the Mud hit Moonshine Sally for the first time. He has also just read out Gary Glitter's name and hit record from this week. I wonder what his personal opinion is of his airbrushing out of these retrospective chart shows?

Can't say I liked much from the 1967 hour previously. All the Engelbert and Tom Jones hits that year were turgid listens. Two were played today.

It should be the 5 July chart.

The chart for the week ending 12 July 1986 was announced on Tuesday 8th July. The official chart moved to a Sunday announcement in August 1987.
Sunday, 4th October, 1987 was the first Sunday chart release on Radio One. The final Tuesday lunchtime chart was on 29th September, 1987.

Give a little love - Bye Bye Baby was a masterpiece in comparison.

Check out the Top Of The Pops clip from when the track was at the top of the charts in subsequent weeks. They are draped over the bonnets of real Rollers. (The Royce kind)

Give A Little Love - 3 weeks on top.

I'm Not In Love - 2 weeks on top! Disgraceful.

Now here are the 70's, The Hustle by Van McCoy.

The original broadcast version of this very chart of w/e 12th July 1975 is infact available from the website www.azanorak.com to download, as broadcast by Tom Browne on Radio 1 at the time, Sunday, 13th July, 1975.

From 1967 he played 6 songs that featured in my top 100 of the 60s last year! (These were Strange Brew, the Happening, Paper Sun - all in succession - then later See Emily Play, She'd Rather Be With Me and Alternate Title.) I have speculated as to whether July 1967 will in retrospect have been my all-time favourite month for music.

I hoped Tony might play 1982 for Samia Ghadie's birthday today, but he featured 1982 2 weeks ago.

Tony will play 1978 next week. Great year but it does come around quite often. It did on May 18th, which will have been 9 weeks ago next week.

Looking ahead a bit, I hope he plays 1988 on August 17th and 1968 on August 24th or 31st.

There is one year that it is very surprising does not appear to crop up more on Pick Of The Pops - 1984 for some reason.

Even years ago with Alan Freeman, the year 1978 was a very frequent appearance.

I think there's a view that you can't go wrong with 1978. Great records in whatever chart you pick, probably peaking in the Spring.

I loved the songs in the 1975 chart Tony played back in April, but this one didn't really hit the spot for me. Let's hope Tony can dig out the proper version of The Smurf Song when he does the 1978 next week.

Next Saturday, he will be playing the charts of the 20th July 1978, which is likely to be w/e 22nd July, and on this Wednesday evening on BBC4 the actual edition of Top Of The Pops that was broadcast on that very date next Saturday, will be shown, from Thursday, 20th July, 1978. Perfect symmetry.

Agreed. From say the summer of 77 to the summer of 79 was a golden time for a range of genres in the Top 20. Non stop quality music.

After that music began to become a bit samey, beginning with that weak synthesiser sound of the early 80s.

What a shame. I don't have any chart show (original or retro) for the following week in 78. I woud have loved it to have been then.

I must remember to listen to this one.

Friday July 21 1978 was the last day of term at school before we broke up for the 6 weeks holiday so there's a lot of nostalgia there. I can actually remember that last day of term with the usual end of year school assembly after lunch followed by an early finish at about 2.30pm with 6 weeks of school holidays to look forward to. Unfortunately I can also remember Sunday September 3 1978 which was the last day before we returned back to school for the new school year with that awful feeling that the 6 weeks were now all over and it was back to school the next day

Which is all more the shame that the summer of 1978 was, weatherwise, something of a damp squib...

Which meant no Sunday chart show for MARRS' Pump Up The Volume's first week at number 1.

Is that the only time a chart (which was different from the previous week, to exclude the Christmas repeat issue) was not played on a Sunday in Radio 1's history?

And going back further, did a chart ever get missed on POTP for some reason?

There was no chart show on 31 August 1997. All regular programmes on Radio 1 were suspended that day due to the death of Diana, Princess of Wales.

Funnily enough I felt exactly the same, enjoyed Mud's Moonshine Sally and Ray Steven's Misty, but not much else.

Being a bit of a chart anorak, I like to "guess" what was number 1 for most charts in the 60s and 70s. Thought it would be Bay City Rollers, but when that got played early, I said to myself "ah, yes, Tears On My Pillow, of course", that's how my mind works
