Hardly. Most of the records during that time were either recorded in America or were British covers of American hits. I don't think anyone would have told Elvis to cut a song short because the BEEB wouldn't like it. Besides, the BBC hardly played any records anyway because they were not allowed to because of needle time restrictions.

Wow! US Rock n Roll classics are short because of the BBC!!!

EDIT: Sorry David, you beat me to that comment by 2 hours!

I won't be listening as i'm trying to watch the TOTP repeats on BBC4. At the moment they're a few weeks behind so no spoilers please!

One thing I noticed when listening to TOTP playing out with What's Another Year on Thursday night was it sounded much better than what I have been hearing on editions of POTP. This goes back to Dale Winton over a decade ago when he was playing a clearly far more recent recording of the track a long way after 1980 and I have an example of it on a taped May 1980 show of his which is so clearly a re-recording and not close to the original. At the time I recorded that show I was aware in seconds it was not the original. It better not happen again this week because I fail to see an excuse for it on a show like POTP.

NO LATER RE-RECORDINGS OF ORIGINAL HIT SINGLES ON PICK OF THE POPS!

Await to see if the Johnny Logan one shows up yet again.

The latter version was played by Tony on R2 Eurovision yesterday. Doesn't bode well.

Those were two good shows. Tony struggled a bit with the pronunciations though.

I had no idea that there was a Eurovision POTP on the radio yesterday, on that temporary offshoot of Radio 2. Just taken a look and at 3pm after this there is a second edition from the 90's to present on for an hour.

My seriously guilty pleasure is the 1975 Dutch winner Ding-A-Dong by Teach-In. I actually paid for it on iTunes!

Goodness gracious me Tony B!

After playing Whitesnake he's just made a comment / joke that just sounded so wrong - "If you've got to pick up a snake make sure it's a large one, it feels much better".

Yet again the re-recorded version of Johnny Logan's What's Another Year which sounds like it was done in the 1990's rather than 1980 to me.

Dreadful version, so not 1980 in production values. Why is it so damned hard to play the correct version?

What's Another Year? Quite a big deal when you are playing singles on POTP and the year in question and the recording played seem to be at least a decade apart.

That's mild compared to what happened on his 90's to present day Eurovision POTP this afternoon at 3pm. Instead of Niamh Kavangh's 1993 winner In Your Eyes he played Kylie's In Your Eyes.

For a man that claims never to voice track shows I think that was was.

What I admire about that song is how they made it sound so much like an Abba song and the formula worked as it won a year after Abba did. Those genius Dutch folks.

Unreal!

What a schoolboy error that was. Who is paying attention and missing such embarrassing cock ups? Have they got a 20 year old work experience with no meaningful pop knowledge looking after things or something? There is no excuse for that whatsoever. That 1993 Irish winner by Niamh Kavanagh is actually quite a classy little track and I liked it at the time. Made No24 in the UK chart. If I'd bothered listening earlier and heard Kylie instead I would have been swearing and switched the show off on the spot.

Just had a listen to this weeks POTP, it sounded to me like Tony said, make sure it's a large one, it's safer. Doesn't make sense though, or am I missing something That Johnny Logan track has got to be one of the worst re-recordings ever.

On this date Tony will be featuring the charts from 1960 and 1981.

They must have the original version in the archive but the re-recorded version in the music system. I think we see more cock ups now we have these systems rather than someone sifting through an archive of vinyl or CD for example. It seems no one checks the tracks, even plays the intros before they program them to play, particularly on the pre-recorded shows.

1981 was played in the first week of June 2 years ago in the week I began this very thread, so will be repetition of much the same chart from the same time of year yet again.

1966 was played around this time last year give or take a week or two. So was 1978. Both coming up this week. 1960 however has not been played since December 2013.

Nothing new here then, this happens all the time thus giving me further reason to push for later charts to be broadcast to freshen things up a bit. Although you'd think with about 35 years to choose from excluding post 1993 that they would be able to avoid this. Do they even look at which years they featured last year?

Time to get round to commenting on the 1980 chart.

May 24 1980

19 YOU GAVE ME LOVE - CROWN HEIGHTS AFFAIR - Pretty decent start, imo. I was sure that the intro must have sampled many times, though checking online I didn't recoginse any of the songs that had. Knowing we don't see the band on TOTP I checked out a youtube clip and was impressed/amused by their slick dance moves!
18 RAT RACE - THE SPECIALS - Not as memorable, to me, anyway, than their No. 1s. I always forget how it goes, apart from the chorus, after I've heard this.
17 LET'S GO ROUND AGAIN - THE AVERAGE WHITE BAND - Enjoyed hearing this great disco tune. I remember Louise (ex-Eternal) doing a cover of this back in the 90s.
13 FOOL FOR YOUR LOVING - WHITESNAKE - Whitesnake came on my radar with the re-release of Here I Go Again in 87, so I forget they were having hits at the beginning of the decade. Tony's snake comment reminded me of DLT introducing this on TOTP, and asking some American girls if they fancied some whitesnake. Luckily he followed this up with a joke about the BBC canteen and nothing untoward!
12 DON'T MAKE WAVES - THE NOLANS - I'm happy to be corrected on this, but I have a feeling this was another re-recording. Not one of my faves of theirs, though I suppose it makes a change from I'm In The Mood For Dancing.
10 WE ARE GLASS - GARY NUMAN - I like the song better than do Gary's vocals on this, which I find quite irritating.
09 I SHOULDA LOVED YA - NARADA MICHAEL WALDEN - Funky tune! I shall have to check out if there's an extended/12" version. I think he'll always be more remembered for the big stars whose records he produced than his own output, though.
08 HOLD ON TO MY LOVE - JIMMY RUFFIN - Nice song. I really enjoyed seeing him performing this on the TOTP repeats. I have to say I don't think I would've guessed, had I not known, it was co-written by Robin Gibb.
07 OVER YOU - ROXY MUSIC - While there's certainly nothing wrong with this at all, when it comes to their 1980 hits it can only be Same Old Scene, which I'm totally in love with, for me.
06 THEME FROM M*A*S*H (SUICIDE IS PAINLESS) - MASH - Never seen MASH, so I've no real affection for the song and find it quite depressing, thoug that's obviously the point of it!
04 MIRROR IN THE BATHROOM - THE BEAT - If I was pushed to pick a fave beat song, it'd be their cover of Can't Get Used To Losing You, but there's certainly nothing wrong with this - very catchy and great energy to it.
02 NO DOUBT ABOUT IT - HOT CHOCOLATE - Love this, mainly because it's such an unusual subject for a Hot Chocolate song, and Errol (RIP) isn't getting all sexy/romantic as usual.
01 WHAT'S ANOTHER YEAR - JOHNNY LOGAN - Ignoring the fact that it was a re-recording, I think it's a shame that this just get dismissed as a bland ballad. I liked the song more when I found out it is about the writer's father who lost his wife after many, many years together, which doesn't come across with someone Johnny's age (at the time) singing it.
20 GOLDEN YEARS EP - MOTORHEAD - Not surprised this was skipped. I didn't recall the lead song Leaving Here until I saw it on TOTP last week. Gave it another listen, and think it might be a grower but I can't see it ever replacing their excellent Ace Of Spades in my affections.
16 BREATHING - KATE BUSH - Again, this wasn't on my radar at all, until it showed up on TOTP last week. I'm afraid this is too weird for my taste, so wasn't bothered it was skipped.
14 THE GROOVE - RODNEY FRANKLIN - I sound like a broken record, but this is another one I'd forgotten how it went before seeing it on TOTP. Shame it wasn't played - nice bit of jazz funk and its easy to see why people on the TOTP thread and blog were comparing it to Shakatak.

Is it my imagination or are certain years like today's 1966 and 1978 often paired together?

'78 must be the most played year on POTP over the years.
