I'm probably not going to be able to catch up with POTP 'til tomorrow or Monday but sounds like a great show. I, personally, will be loving Sonia, Big Fun, etc. I didn't particularly mind the Jive Bunny song at the time, but it got a bit too much when they just kept releasing them. I know some people hate the Stars on 45 records, but at least they went to the effort of re-recording the songs. That Black Box song drives me crazy. I don't know why Milli Vanilli got such hate because they were fronting someone elses vocals when other groups, like them, Boney M, etc were doing the same thing..

Didn't they do 89 a few weeks back too?

Great stuff from Bobby Brown, Black Box, Alice Cooper and Kylie but especially the Beatmasters track. Love that. Anywayawanna is an underrated album.

Haha yeh I thought Lil Louis was going to turn the R2 airwaves blue for a second then! Really thought that they had forgotten about the ahem 'vocal' in the middle of that track at one point!

This dance classic never gets played on mainstream radio (for obvious reasons!) let alone Radio 2 on a Saturday afternoon. A real delight to hear once again, and very reflective of the emerging dance culture of the late 80s which was totally ignored by radio 1 at the time.

Interesting they picked a week with such a poor number 1 and such a controversial dance song at number 2.

This is exactly what I thought too. Plus the fact that 1989 was not played very long ago either, as JBO stated, never mind 1978 just four weeks ago, the inclusion of this particular 1989 chart was interesting to say the least. On what basis they choose each weeks years who knows? I sure hope it's a human being and not a computer programmed rotation.

Absolutely loved 1978.My favourite year ever,I'd say.

Sadly,I didn't enjoy 1989 much at all.I was really starting to lose interest in the Top 40 around then.Sonya was a guilty pleasure to listen to,but the rest of the SAW stuff was shite.I fast forwarded quite a few of the tracks from that hour.Shakespeare's Sister was good, but really wish he would have played Transvision Vamp. They hardly ever get played.

I shan't even bother listening to any more POTP shows later than 1987.There were certainly some good songs around but you have to swim through so much dross to get to them.

Today's Pick Of The Pops (as Robbie stated) is taken from this week in late August 1965 and 1974.

Radio 2 @ 1pm

We have a 1966 Top Ten hit back in the 1974 top five, which good as it is, I don't think should be played if we're looking at '74 as the year. I wonder why the original was re-released then.

The track is;

Spoiler
What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted by Jimmy Ruffin.

Also worth wondering is this question about this group in the 1974 chart;

Spoiler
Glitter Band, Just For You does a No15 into the top ten at No10 and would normally get a play. But are they guilty by association with their namesake and not likely to get an airing?

This is a very widely held view, one I've held for years, and had confirmed by many others on these music threads.

Historically speaking I guess 1965 is considered miles better than 1974, but for me it's 1974 I'm looking forward to most.

I hate that Bob Dylan track, Like A Rolling Stone.

Interesting that the OCC are saying a traditional w/e date of a Saturday here, which the 28th August was in 1965, when infact all the official Guinness chart books like Hit Singles & Top 40 Charts use a Thursday week ending, 26th August, yet this chart is exactly the same.

Into 1974, and Cozy Powell. I think he ended up crashing on a motorway, getting thrown from his car onto the verge with the car ending up on top of him, finishing him off.

Na-Na-Na......terrible song and as for the lyrics, oh dear.

Yes indeed, I understand he was as pissed as a fart and not wearing a seatbelt. He was also talking to his girlfriend on his mobile phone, although that wasn't illegal at the time. She heard the whole thing as he ploughed off the road.

Bet he does not play the Glitter Band, who go up from No15 to No10 in this chart. Guilty by association.

Immedately what I thought of and visualised when I heard Mr.Soft!

Why did What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted re-appear in the charts in its original format in 1974, just 8 years after previously making the top ten I wonder? It seems curious, and it was an even bigger hit this time around. I don't think TV ads were making hits all over again in 1974 like they started doing in the 80's. My fave version remains the 1981 electronic version by Dave Stewart & Colin Blunstone though.

I'm sure that You Make Me Feel Brand New was used in an advert some years ago too. I forget exactly what for. Washing powder maybe?

The Record Retailer chart had a Thursday week ending until shortly after this date, preventing it being one of the 3 charts used as one of the ones from which mean positions were calculated by the BBC. Fortunately it got into kilter so that it could be used shortly before the Disc charts ceased in '67, so that briefly 4 charts were used.

Which is just ridiculous. He could have played in even if he didnt mention the name.

The BBC do have double standards sometimes.

Also not played was Y Viva Espana, which went from 28 to 15 that week...

I can remember the 1974 chart being announced on Radio 1, presumably on Tuesday 20 August 1974. Specifically, I can remember 'Love Me For A Reason' being played as a new entry and 'Y Viva Espana' being played as a climber. I'm assuming it would have been Johnnie Walker who counted down the new chart. He used to play the top 5 at 12.45pm, count down the top 30 just before the number 1 and then play some new entries and climbers - it's the latter bit I recall the most with those two records being played. I remember thinking both were awful!

For The Osmonds it was their first number 1 but quite soon afterwards their chart fortunes went into a very quick decline. This was their 4th top 5 hit out of 5 releases but their next one bombed out at number 28, the one after that was another top 5 hit but after that they never made the top 30 again. Even Donny's career soon floundered as his solo career ground to a halt and his duets with sister Marie began to sound old hat within a few months of this chart.

'Y Viva Espana' seemed to spend most of the first part of 1974 bubbling under the top 50. The single first made the Breakers Chart (the records on the way up just outside the top 50) on the chart dated 16 February 1974. After two weeks it moved inside the top 10 of the breakers and in total spent 22 weeks of the next 25 weeks inside the Breakers Chart before finally entering the top 50 on 10 August 1974. After a climb to number 4 then a slow meander down the top 50 (with 19 weeks in total on the chart) it fell from the top 50 for 2 weeks over Christmas 1974 before making a quick return in the first New Year chart of 1975 and spending another 9 weeks in the top 50 with a peak this time of number 35. It's enduring appeal during 1974 has always escaped me...

Sylvia, who sang Y Viva Espana is not even Spanish! She is a Swede, who had her 68th birthday a couple of days ago.

I have an amusing tale to tell about the track at No14 in this 1974 edition today, Stephanie de Sykes - Born With A Smile On My Face. The record had peaked at No2 a few weeks before. Well I own a copy of a 1977 album from K-Tel called "40 Number One Hits" which infact only has 39 No1 hits on it, because they put Stephanie de Sykes on it despite it never making No1 and peaking at No2. A quite remarkable mistake for a big album that was televised widely at the time.

Here's the TV ad for the falsely titled album!
